a & devada sii ae otigh feat ot the ground before ‘abandoning it. ‘os @O Phe time Hus gone by, when winers, <> Daily Transeript. . Nevada County Official Press. . = EE eS THURSDAY MORNING, FEB. 19th. ‘Nevapa.—Never, in thehistory of Nevada, “has 0 much prospecting in gold, silver and eopper been carried on as at the present “time. “Ground that hae‘Ysid dormant. for years hus been prospected and found to be of thé greatest value. No one has any idea of the namber of rich‘claims that have been discovered within a few. months—many of them witbir'a few weeks. It is not surprieing now, when we see parties starting out on a trip of this kind,to hear of their coming ‘mn contact with rich. diggings, of some cuatacter. Miners are taking the deepest iute~ gat in-the new lodes and-are making a thor ~ failing to get. a few dollars _to the pan, desert their claims and look for something richer. Now, if they succeed in rajsing the color, they stick to it—as they should do—tiH the ground bas been thoroughly ransacked.— The following case is a-fairiliustration of how claims have been abandoned because they would not pay: A friend of ours was telling us ofa claim he had purchased 16. longer ago than last'week. He was out prospecting, and _ eeeing a few dilapidated sluice~boxes remains ing in a set of claims that looked as if they had not bee: touched for several years, comwenced panning out and succeeded in ob+ taining a favorable prospect. He ascertains ed the owner of the claims and asked it be wished to selt them. ‘Tbe owner told biu. he might have the lot for $25. Our friend pungled, and before night he succeeded in paaning out $28— getting the claims and $3 tor his day’s prospecting. He thinks as soon ashe can get water he will take out a large amount of money. Just so with many ofthe abanduned claims. The original owners have lost confidence in good ground, simply be~ enuse they lacked the perseverance tu teat it. We presume if another humbug e2— citement is kicked up, this section of country ~~ will go unprospected uatila new set of people arrive in the places of those who are carried off: -We beligye to-day if this region was thoroughly taken in hand it would produce more.in-the next twelve months than it has * in any previous year. We lack men of ener_ ay and determination. The fact is very apparent of late thst most of our business men are becoming interested in mining. By this atep they wili be largely benefitted. First in building up the town in such a manner as its resources will most assuredly justify. Secondly, in increasing their business and enhancing the value of their property.— How often has it been stated that. the only thing that kept Nevada up was the simple fact of ite-being the county seat. -At-times we thought, when men dwelt on thie fact, that it would be a good idea tu have the eounty seat changed, in order to awaken our merchants, who have so much at stake bere, trom the sleep which seems to know no wak~ ing, to a full realization of the position they eccupy. .Then they would eacourage railroads— new roads would be built leading out in every direction, capital would be invert: e@ ii mining, aud encoutagement given to ail whoare ready to risk their time in obtaining the fabulous amount of gold which lies at oar Very door. How many chances the people of Nevada have let slip by them during the past-ten years. ‘The Henness Paes road has _been kept open to travel this winter for the first time. The Washoe trade to which we are justly entitled has been allowed to go by” the way of Placerville. We could . have silver excitement to the present time. No, we let it go, thereby enriching another portion of the State instead of eur own. Some eay this travel has ‘amonnted to but very little, ne this winter proves. Only short~ sighted men view it m.such a light. They forget that this ia the first season the experiment hae been tried, and being looked upon aga doubtful one, the traveling community had no confidence in it. “The snow has been deeper thie winter on that route than was ever Known, and yet the stages been impeded. It proves what might have been done. belore. great Pacific Railroad has been permitted to fizzle out. here and not a dollar was subscribed. we see chances fur making Nevad& second to no town in the State pass from our reach. ‘Our people now begin to see what they should have taken hold of years ago. If Nevada and a plank road to Maryville. eine have not The enterprise of building a ‘branch. road to connect with the A subscription was opened Thus capitalists had gene to work as they should: have done, when the subject was agitated, we should have had a railroad to Sacramento _—= C#rRichard Abbey, Esq, of North Sin. .~%ATE FROM THE EAST ; A Deugees sean beeps: * Nevada Iron and Brass Found The] : . 4 ; ; oe sige . lates the wing incidento eo ba of, eo : Juan, writes the Democrat that the Ditch New York.
