ESMERALDA.—We have received a letter
~~ ftom-&-gentleman--who Nves ii the town of"
Aurora, in the Esmeralda District. The letter is dated January 12th, and speaks in the
most glowing terms of the miieral wealth.of
that region.. The population of Aurora, according to our correspondent, is about 300:
The-accommodations for that number of “‘people are ample, as he says there are twentyfive good houses, six large tents, and about:
one hundred cabins, some of them very neatly built of stone. There ate three stores,"
three restaurants, _two. butcher: shops,’ one
bakery, one shoemaker’s shop, five saloois—
one of which contains a billiard table, the collision of ‘whose balls, ean be constantly heard
from the street. Aurora, aceording to our
correspondent, is a charming place, and, to
usehis OW graphic kiliguage: “the most
quietest town ever I lived in, for it seems
every body knows his business, and don’t mingle with others.” This must be owing to
the entire abserice of old maids from that favored leality. Lumber is worth $250 per
thousand, and scarce even at that figure.
Our correspondent further says that there
are three millsin that neighborhood, the near-,
est of whichis twenty miles, and a miserable
road at that. Good water and fire wood are
abundant, and the scenery he pronounces
sublime. Two feet of snow is the deepest
they had this winter, and they apprehend no
difficulty in keeping the ‘road open to Virginia City. and Placerville. Two expresses
and one weekly mail run there. Altogether,
our correspondent is highly pleased with the
town of Aurora and its prospects:
