AND MORDERER.ARRESTED
The Sheriff of this county received a dis<
patch yesterday from H. Gooding. Sheriff of
placer county, thathe bad Thomas Burke in
jail He was arrested a€ Auburn early yes-terday morning. 6 or 7 shots were exchanged before they succeeded in-capturing him. .
“PT heee are ull the particalars we have received up to this time. A posse started from
this ety yesterday for Auburn and will meet
Sheriff Knowlton at_that place, he being on
—hieway from Sacrameuto. We give a, few
iteme in regard to this noted desperado : —He eseaped from the State Prison in the year
1261, and came up te Grass Valley on. Saturday, Feb. 15th, 1862. Inthe evening of
that day he went into Terrill’s saloon at
Grass Valley and pushed J. M. Wright, who
was atanding at the bar, out of the position +
an which he stood. Wright remarked to him
“make slow. Burke turned round to him and
«paid, “what do you mean by going slow.”—
Burke said, “I'll go as slow as I plesse,” at
the same time reaching fora knife or pistol.
Wright told him again to go slow. Burke
said, “what do you mean-by that 1” intent
on having a row. Wright said, ‘nothing, I
want to bet $300 that I willt-scratch.”—
Barke said, “what do you meau by scratch ?
you den’t seratch nothing, you won't nor
can’t scratch me.” Wright said, “I don’t
want to, but I will bet $300 I will scratch.”
Burke said, ‘‘do you know what I think of
you? I want to bet $300 you’re a d—d
gut.” Wright eaid “what's that you say?”
Burke then struck him in the face, pulled
out a knife and killed him instantly. He
wae tried on the 16th day of April last and
convicted of murder. in the first degree.—
Wednesday, April 22d, he was sentenced by
Judge McFarland to be hang on the 23d day
of May. The case was appealed ‘to the Supreme Court and a stay of proceedings ordered tu give Bu: ke’s counsel time to file the
necessary papers; in the mean time Burke
éscaped. The time has now expired, and
Burke will be hung.
On Wednesday, June 11th, at 12 o'clock
inthe day, Burke cut through bars and bolts
and succeeded in” making his escape.
Sherd¥ Knowlton used all means in* his
power to get some tidings from him,’ but it
was impessible to get anything definite. He
was reported to -be at Virginia city, Humboldt, Portland, Oregon, Grass Valley and at
other places about the sametime. The Sherifhas spent about $1,000 already in trying
to capture him and had finally given him up,
. Burke is probably the most desperate murderer in the State. He was arrested in Mexico for murder several yeats ago and escaped.
He atated after he had been sentence in this
county to be hung that he had been trapped
as bad as he was then, when ninety-nine
chances tn a hundred were against him, but
he took the odd chance and got out of the
scrape, and he would do so in thia case. He
did, and succeeded well up to the time.—
His fate is now, sealed. He will be brought
to this county and hung by the neck, until he
