, DEDICATION OF THE Barrist CHURCH.
‘This interesting ceremony took place yesterday morning—the Rev. Mr. Brierly, the pas. hes
tor of the church, being assisted by the Rev.
-0.€. Wheeler, of Sacramento, who preached
the dedicatory sermon, and -the Rev. Mr.
4 Deal, of the M-E. Chareh. “Mr. ‘Whesler nati
has evidently learned, by experience, ‘that
the ‘most vulnerable part of of humanity lies in
_ the region of the pocket; as he applied himfi
‘self, throughout the whole of his sermon, to
demonstrating the fact, that religion is profit‘able. -He proved that religion: is profitable,
not only in a spiritual sense—a fact which:
needed no demonstration—but also in a pecuniary sense. The Reverend gentleman, judging from his sermon, is a proficient in the
science of SocialEconomics, aid his arguments might have furnished instruction even. to-2 Malthus or a Smith: Lokalitums was
so far convinced. of the soundness of = his }logic, that he invested all his loose change
(he dares not “say how much that was) in
church stock-~and he is.satisfied.that-thein-.
vestment will prove much more profitable
than his Washoe speculations. It is to be re._gretted that the Jews did not attend the .
ceremonies of yesterday. Lokalitums feels
confident that one of the Rev. Mr. Wheeler's
sermons would make a. Christian of every
mother’s son of them.
Rev. Mr. Brierly stated that the church,
as it stands, coste a fraction over $5,000,
of which $3,000 have been ‘paid ; leaving a
‘balance of $2,000, yet due. $575 75 of this
amount was raised, by subscription and cash
‘contributions, from the congregation present,
‘yesterday morning, and it is to be hoped that}
further contributions, together with the sale
or-rent of pews, will soon free the church
from debt, >

the basement-is fitted up to answer the purposes of a Sunday school and prayer -meet‘ings.. May the Fire King save it from seed
further visitation.
THEATRE. ~The house was crowded to ite
utmost capacity, on Saturday evening, to see
Mrs. Julia Dean Hayne in the terrible character of Lucretia Borgia. Judging Mrs.
Hayne by the ordinary and generally accepted
rules of theatrical criticism, we have no hesitation in saying that her pérsonation of the
character was all that her most ardent ad~ mirers could wish. But, has it everoceurr* ed to Mrs. Hayne that, though she may tall
murder sh@Ban not look it. There is too
much. of the good ‘and. pure and benevolent,
in her face and eye—stamped there by Dame
Nature, herself—to permit the most furious
¢locution, though she is & perfect mistress of
it, to lead an audience into the! illusion that
. she is really a poisoner and a dexterous wielder of the stiletto, “Mra. Hayne has wonder.
ful talents’; but, when her tongue is busy
with threats of “assassination, the goodness
and beauty of her face give the lie to it. She
' may astonish an audienee, in a wicked char.
acter, but she will always bring the great heart
of the audience to her feet in a good one.—
This is ventursome criticism, so high up in
the mountains and so far from San Francis' €0, but it is honest.—Mrs. Hayns is suppor-'
ted by a good stock company. Mrs. Burrill,
Mrs. Leonard,“andMiss ‘Cogewell are always
safe and sure to please ; so, also, are the two
Thayers and Mr. Faylor. A little more study
and a little less reliance on the prompter,
however, would render matters much more
_tasy for the players and much more pleasant
' for the audience. _ The play for to-night is
Camille, which, although somewhat worn, is
* still attractive enough to crowd our theatre.

shots of Grass Valley and this plaée, indulged
in this rare sport, at Hughes’. race course,
on Saturday afternoon. The purse shot for
amounted to. sixty dollars, which was won
by’a gentleman of this city. The pigeons:
were shot from a spring trap; twenty-dne
yards rise, with one hundred yards bound.
A. Hooper and J. Miller, of Grass Valley, }
and Barney Harrigan, of this place, were the
contestants—each having put up a dozen . }
_ birds. “ Barney ” sliot.tén and the other two
gentlemen eight apiece. “ Barney” brought
the money and the 20% home with him.
