Sacramento Union comes out strongly in favor
of taking a man from tie mining regions, and
north of the latitade of Sacramento, to be
the United States Senator to fill the seat now
oceupied by Mr, Latham. The Sacramento
Bee, supposes the Union has itseyes on Mr.
Conness, of El Dorado county, or Mr. Sargent,
Messts. Conness and Sargent are talentedand distinguished gentlemen. The: Nevada
though not a. giant in
dimensions, has s giant’s‘strength, seems to
take it for granted that the Union's favorite
ie Mr. Sargent, and-urges his claims to the
Senatorial toga, with ite usual plainness of
speech and directness of argument. The

have no business to interfere-in the political
economies vf the sovereign Staté_of Calitornia, we-feel impelled to indorse allthe compliments it: pays that gentleman. There is
not, in all California,a man who better understands the wauts, wishes and interests of
the people of that State than Mr. Sargent,
and not a man who ean represent the people
courage, and efficiency. We simply speak
“what we know. ‘Yoward Mr. Conness wey
entertain none but the kindliest feelings. He
made a glorious Union speech,in our hearing
the night before the last Calitornia elections,
in Sacramento, and we applauded him to the
echo ; but nevertheless, we would _ prefer
seeing Mr Sargent invested with the Califor.
nia toga. We people of Washoe, though .
the insignificant re¢idents of a Territory, feel
that Mr. Sargent is identified with us aad our
welfare. To him. more than to any other
man, in or out of Congress, we owe the success of the Pad¥fic railroad bill—a civic
achievment in which we feel ss deep a con~
cern as the people of California. For the
anke of the future State of Washoe, we. hepe
that the legislators of California will trent
the preferences of Mr. Sargent’s friends with
