Roumogep SLAVE INSURRECTION IN
‘Gzoreia.—The following dispatch, dated at
‘Macon, Ga., on Thursday, Dec. 27, is copied.
‘from the New York Tribune :
Rumors of a rising among the slaves in
the south-western rt of the State, prevail
‘here. Itis im ble to. say with certainty
‘whether, an insurrection has really taken
‘place, or is only threatened.
The t care.is taken. to keep the
matter secret, but most exaggerated reports
are whispered alond in. iis toon to-day. .
There is certainly much exitement among
the negroes éyerywhere, and the occasional
rumors of fighting at Charleston make them
.restless and very dangerous.
Tam told that some planters are hastily
‘getting all things ready to send their wives
cand young children tot the North.
= An officer at Fort Moultrie, having a
policy of insurance in one of our leading life
‘Insurance companies, wrote to the company
.oif the 22d inst., stating the probability that
the fort wou!d soon be attacked, and the
-eértainty that “it weuld be defended to the
‘last extremity,” and inquirimg what would
be the effect-upen his policy if he should fall.
He. was ‘promptly answered, that although
the company was not legally liable where the
tinsured fell in battle, yet. ‘‘ if he should thus
_ fall now, whilst doing his duty gloriously,
and abandoned by the Government, he need
have no fears but the policy would be paid.”

The wide reputation, which: Dr. J Hostet
