THE POWER oF Conscience. —One day,
during August, ‘of 1851, a Tespectible farmer
pamed Watts, living near From, in England,
went to market, leaving his daughter Sarrah
—a pretty girl of plxteen—to mind the
house. Upon his return howe, he fonnd the
helpless girl lying dead~in-the dairy, ‘with
s#veral abrasions on her head, and other evidenevs that sbe had been foully. murdered.
Aa nothing had been stolen trom the house,
apparently, it was hard to imagine what had
instigated the ussassin to comunit the brutal
guiltyone. Three vagabond characters of . .
Frome and-the-vieinity— were arrested wpon
the mere ground of their being such characters, und were committed for trial; «but the
jury acquitted them, there being no reliable
proof of any kind to fasten proot on them.
Arrangements were next iade-to arrest &
man namel Joseph Sears, who had. been a
suitor for the girl's hand; but he left:the
writ could be served upon him ; and so the
matter ended for the. time. Ten years roll.
ed away’; and eve day about two we eks ago,
Joseph Sears returned -to Frome an invalid
He weit to a magistrate’s-to-get his remit
tance form filled up,that he might draw
three months’ pay due to himeon his discharge from the urmy, and exhibited 80 matiy
signs of extreme unireppiness while the magistrate-was prepariag the document, that the
latter asked him what was the matter. Sears
hesitated fur a moment, and then with an
expression of fwartul wildness in his eyes,
declared that he was the murderer of Sarah
Thinking thut the soldier must be
mad, the man‘of law , gnde ‘avored te soothe
him, telling him that 6° did not know what
he was saying. Sears then repeated his former avowal, declaring that cougciousness of
his crime would indeed make a madmatfof
hin, if he coneenled it any longer. Finding
that he wis sane, and ia earnest, the magistrate ordered his clerk to take down in writing what the soldier might say, and Seuss
at onee made the following confession +.“
matdered Sarah Watts, I hope that God
above .will let me live to see her again in
another world. Ihave had it in my head a
long time. I have been very unhappy ever
since. I went away, I waise unhappy. I
hope that Gdd will wash aw: ay my sins. I
did it for love. It.was in August it hapened. About three o’clock in the afternoon
went to the house. I thought she was
worth some money, and she Wouldn't tell
where -it:was.._I.told her to tell me where
it was, and’t would marry. her and take her
to America—I was very fond of ber—then
we would live happy together said, 4
you don’t tell” we where itis, I willbe the
deuth of you” I then took hold of her by
the neck. I had a poker in my has, and 1
hit her on the head with it. I said £ should
suffer fer it, either in heaven orin hell. J
struck her in the Kitchen and dragged her into the dairy. I eaught hold of her by the
feet, and put her head first.into the milk
pail, and lett her in the dairy dead. I took
two shillings out of & cup on the mantel
piece, .1 went up stairs and searched above.
[ took some clothes and went my way.andwent to sea. IT was blamed for it at.the
time, and I enlisted as a soldier to get out of
the way. Ihave now got it off my mind.
I killed ber for leve. FE was very fond of
her.” After reading the confession over, to
see that 1t was correct, Sears signed his name
to it and surpendered himself a prisoner to
the law.— Exchange. ~—
