Lovers In Deep warer.—A gentléman . .
recently from Angel's, Calaveras county, relates to the Stockton Independent one of the
most distressing incidents of the delug@, as follows: ‘T'wo gentlemen of Angel’s had made
their wrrangements to be married te ladies of
the same place on the Thursday préceeding,
the Saturday on which the deluge culminated.
They both, with their intended brides,“on
Thursday morning eressed dver the Stanislaus at O’Byrne’s Ferry, to the parental
hame of ane of the young ladies. The legal
fanetionary with whotti the young gentlemen
had arranged to meet and officiate in marrying the quartetto was to come slong “in the
evening.” Now it.so happened that ‘in the
evening,” the waters of the river had risen
to such a hight as to: make the transit of the
ferrybost impracticable. So the form ef the
intended twarriage--was on-one-side;— whilst
the substance was_on the other, For a long
_time-the parties essaved to-get over — the difficulties that beset them by loudly talking
aeross the roaring waters: but it would nut
do. The questions and responses were alike
In an hour or two the attempt

the inexorable waters rose up and into the
house, and the startled inmates were fain to
escipe up vic side of the hill inte the hen
house, where it is presumed they passed a
miserable existence antil daylight and a magistrate relieved them from the impression
that “ Jordan is a hard road to travel.’”’
