The result of this discoveieee . ry was that Mr. Swasey receiveda severe lompoouing in the next iesueof the paper, which last Mr. G. W. He retarned to Washoe in compuny with a friend, and the two reptired tegether to the Unton Saloon to in and accosted: Derrickson somewhat roughly. saying something about the paragraph in. the .paper; Derrickson and « warm altercation ensued, At length, at the suggestion of Swasey they went to the Times office together. and after some words about the matter, Swasey . paragraph, Derrickson refused to retract it,. saying it Was every word true. Swasey retorted : “You are d——d liar.” Derrickson then ordered ,him out of the house He started backwards towards the doar; Treaching behind as if te draw a pistel ; whereupon Derrickson drew his derringer and: fired the . ball striking Swasey's chin, breaking his jaw and carrying away two of his_ teeth, — e then turned and ran out pursued by Derrickson, who-drew-a five-shooter and fired:an ineffectual shot. Upon this Swasey turned and fired : the first ball struck a bystander in. the . leg ; the second went_ through the-heart of Derrickeso, killing hiar instantly Swasey was taken into custody to await examination, wid. surgical relief was ae for ‘ hia.
