postpone1861. an do 80 treet. BERT. ada, he HighUST ‘for ,Sacras es at the :nd trans‘§! HTS! ! NUALS . mbrot ty of . Edition piece you-will be happy.” _ e : “New Years 5 om aud with it loses ; the season of the helidays. The advent of this. interesting epoch is ‘looked upou with pleasurable anticipations by all classes of the community, save ene, and that js the old bachelors. Aw ‘old ‘bachelor—we mean a ‘real, _ Simon pure one, and not ose of your hypo critical make-believes, as some that Lokalitums knows. of, who ouly remain single because nobody will have them—a_real old . bachelor, we say, has: an inbotn aversion to what some people. all. ‘“aweet— cherubs,” “dear angels,” &c., but which hie calle = iefernal brats, not tobe tolerated. A real bachelor thinks it bad enough to have to comalias on the beauty of her r offspring, when, in Teulity, le would-“nemore Handle the said ‘beautiful offspring than you would & snake, ‘without living besides to empty -his pockets’ “on New Years Day, and invest the contents Jn New Years gifts. This is why old bache-. dors dread the holidays—they, poor wretches, have nothing to expect from arly body unless it be, now and then, some ingulting -Valen‘tine, whilst everybody expects some present from them. The contrast, yesterday, between the joyful faces of the ladies and juveniles and-the shy, restless look of some bachelors we know of, was quite striking. But, Mr. Old Bachelor, there‘ are two sides every picture. raat If it were not for these holida ys, the bachelor's lot would be really spléndid: having no: establishment, he his no nian to make, ‘whereas he is» himself invited everywhere. ‘He can criticize the puddings of Mrs. Smith, _ or the pumpkin pies of Mrs. Brown, which he frequently does after having devoured them ; but nobody can criticize his—and the holidays are but a small retribution for a. whole year’s sponging. Last New Years was-spent in pleasant calls by most of our people, and all the members of the TRANSCRIPT firm had their full share of that sort of enjoyment They hereby thank their respective friends for the cordial reeeption they met with. Some of them, it is true, do not give mitch promise of ever recipro. cating, in kind, the favors received, as they are rather far gone on the road to celibacy, . but others who incline towards a domestic state, will endeavor, by next New Years; to return the compliments. received. Not DEAD, BUT LIVETH.—A few days sinee, Lokalituns being somewhat pushed for an item, after perambulating all ever the city, finally conctuded to pilfer something from the Nevada Democrat, which he did, thereby making himself rather obnoxious to a dentist named Dr. Norton MeNoughton. Lokal‘tums ‘feels the position he is placed in, and 4s an anonymous individual, makes humble> apology to. the aggrieved party. Lokalitums thinks he wasg-too severe on the Dr. and now as.he has turned up : hopes that he will live to a good old age. ~ Dr. “be virtuous and Hear him : MONTEZUMA Jan. ist, 1861. Ep. DaiLy Transcript :—I observe in your paper of the 34th ult., an article stating that I froze to death, in a barn at North San Juan. Permit me to say that it isa d—d, diabolical-lie... a-thelanguage of —theimmortal Webster “I still live.” I mustsay to you, sir, that f never was ina barn in North San Juan, in my life. The -base slander emanated in the braius of some quack Dentist who was affé by the “green eyed monster.” I took th¢ lead in North San Juan, and practice out ' their h: wis, and money from their pockets. For this they announce that\am no longer an inhabitant of this beautifal and_ harming world. Hopin ublish this, I feunain, Yours ape P Dit. N. MCNoucaron. THe Prize Fraiper—The long-talked of fight between Matt Trady and Bill Black: well comes off to-day, at Storms’ Ranch, ‘about nine miles from Nevada, and near the line which separates the counties of Nevada and Placer. We wnderstand that a sort of ~ ‘an amphitheatre, capable of containing fifteen hundred persons, has been erected, and we have no doubt that the attendance will be large. A line of coaches will ply between this place and the battle grouud. This prize fight reporting being rather out of Lokalitums’ line, we shall endeavor to secure the services of sume scicntific individual, thoroughly initiated in the techuicalities of refined and enuobliig urt, such as “ mitsigg on the goggle,” “ tuppiug ‘om “the mug,’ ** closing the pot itor tr Loe &e. ; . a ae b.W, Gu ue Ww years day, at the house of A. SENATOR” LATHAM’s SPEECH.—The Union’s St. Louis correspondent furnishes the remarks of Senator Latham to which we ‘eferred on Saturday. As all wish te know how we are represented on the ‘important question dividing the nation, we publish his remarks in full. Mr. Latham said: “Mr. President, it is not my purpose to address the Senate at this time upon the pending resolution. I rise to. correct a false impression upon thé public mind, as I have seen it published in several leading journals of the country, as to the attitude of California in the present crisis. It_has been said, and by many believed, that in. the event of the secession of several of the States of the Union, California would avail herself of the fig to declare her own independence, . ‘conjunetion-with the other territory of the United States on thé Pacific, would form a Paecifie Republic. “Mr, President,. there is not a word of truth in this idea, and it does great injustice to the people of that-state, This ‘Union has no more loyal subjects than the people of “California ; and out of her half cesar = lation, I believe there are not man union in any shape. California sed etide in the Union as it is, and as it may be. And if, as_ seems now to be conceded, the cotton states withdraw from ‘the Union, and are eventually followed by all the Southern states, California, I am certain; will still remam with the great West and the North, with whom she,is identified. ciynptome of applause in the galleries. } In addressing: this body upon the 16th of April last, I foreshadowed the idea ofa Pacific Republic upon the dissolution of the existing Union. I am satisfied, upon more mature reflection, to say the least, I was. premature. For whatever may be) my own opinion of the right-or wrong of the present puter be question—a question in which Calioa ing or vital interest—I feel it it my ie ee n duty to thus give, not only my own opinion; but, as one of ber representatives, to state what'I believe to be the voice of her majority. There ll but one thing which will or ean _alenate the of the people of the Pacific from the Thion as iti is, or as it may be, and that is, a failure to give them a Pacific Railroad, and, until this is completed, Overland Mail facilities. — Upon this question they are clamorous, urgent, unanimous; and, since the great West and North are thoroughly committed to. this material idea, their loyalty cannot be queetioned, i shall, Mr. President, at some future day, with the indulgence of the Senate, submit a few reasous for this opinion, and aleo ‘allude to the present condition of the country, but not until other Senators are heard, who rank in age, experience end: wisdom.” Frenptsn.—On Saturday morning, about 2 o'clock, the brick house of H. K. W. Clarke. attorney-at-law, in San Leandro, Alemeda county, was blown up by the explosion af a quantity of powder placed in his office in the basement. The whole front of the house is badly shattered. Sashes and gluse were thrown with grest force inte the garden. There were six persons in the house at the time—Mr. and Mrs. Clark, “their son, and three servants, all of whom escaped without injury. Ne clue has been found ag to who the perpetrator of the ortrage was. Moke Disunion.—The edstor of the Pacific’ Methodist, writing from Stockton, says that an ‘unfortunate spirit” exists there among the colored-brethren hailing from the northern and southern sections. An “ irrepressible conflict” is waging, such as will require the intervention of the most powerful conservative element to prevent serious.consequences. ( ‘was commitsed, “aaa [Sen .
