SAREE Oo On SeenON New Year’s Day.~-Judging by our ex‘changes, published since Tuesday, we are inclined to believe that last New .Year’s Day “was 4 remarkably happy one, all over” California. Balls, merry-makings, and junketin all the cities, towns, and hamlets in the j state. We like this. It. shows that our peole have entered upon another year with light . It is better to be be merry than sad ;. for where there is merriment there is energy, and where their ig energy there is prosperity. California, with such glorious sons and daughters as she can boast, can never have cause to hang: her harp upon the willows.. Let other states grumble and secede ; her path will ever be a bright and jovial one. . San JuAN BALL.—Some three: or four . ewe, San Juaners are our authority for saying . . that the ‘New Year’s Ball, at the Sierra Nevada Hotel, under the auspices of the Gordon Family, was the most delectable affair that ever graced that beautiful burg. A Humbuggér—we don’t mean a fellow who deals _ what between rank hospitality. of the gentlemeh and the exquisite beanty of ‘the ladies, he felt that he had enjoyed Paradise for-one night, though he shoulil never get a taste of the-one promised te-the righteous. We have secured the services of a special and competent reporter, but whether: he betted on the right side, and got oblivious on account of iia good luck, or weiner his tain it is that e had not made his appeatdnke at the hour of our goiig to press last night. We can, therefore, only give such an account of the. fight as ‘was brought in by the-large concourse of people who had gone to'see it. Twenty-nine rounds were fought, aceordding to the most prevalent version. It was evident, from the start, that Traeywould have it all his own.-way. He drew the first blood, knocked his.man down first, and, -in fact, had the better of his opponent. till the } last round, when he was-declared winner. + Some persons, who are competent judges, ‘say that the training of Blackwood was not judicious, as, iustead of healthy exercise, he: reduced himself by means of medicines, which produced artificial perspiration. However this may be, his wind failed him at the fifth round. ~The fight lasted 45 minutes. P.8. Since the above was in type, our reporter has arrived ; but the length of his report precludes the possibility of. inserting it at this late hour. ‘We shall give it in full to-morrow eae: VERMONT AND HER PERSONAL LIBERTY BILL. — A correspondent of the Bulletin writes The erst, it now appears, was altogether in error fn'reporting that the proposition to repeal the Personal Liberty Bill of Vermont had been unequivocally defeated-by the legiglature of that state._The final acsubject to the commissioners on the revision of the 6 3 of the state, with instructions to report whether the present. law upon the rendition of fugitive slaves issin conflict with the Constitution of the United States. These commissioners are, ex-Judge Pierrepont, Bennett, and Isham, and Hon. Andrew Traey; formerly member of Congress—all known and it is considered that this plan of proceeding was specially desired to bring about a defeat of the bill. -Yet the telegraph agents have’ not’ corrected this fiagrant error, alas a justification for ser ecension. ‘THe STaTe inancoacaThere appears, says the Morning Call, to be a good prospect for a crisis in our State finances. The Hesperian is gradually growing in volume.and in excellence. = . peepee) Kissine.—K.te L. K., writing to one of the most popylar magazines of the day on the subject of kissing, snys: “Tam vain enough to pride myself on being a girl of sense, und I dearly love, and can appreciate good kissing—indeed I should quite. as liefhave a nice sweet kiss as a new Ca mere. Considering the fact that there is a capital building under way, as well as a House of Refage, for which additional appropriations will have to ba made, the financial coudition of the state is not at all flattering, and the prospect is favorable for adding to the state indebtedness. ‘ TERRIBLE.. TRAGEDY ~The Fort Wayne accident, with consequences still more’ terrible, eccurred in Adams county the other diy. The story is at once the briefest and most awful we have read of in msny a year. A woman about to chura buster, threw some. bail. ing water i in the churn, into which one of the . children had, unnoticed by the mother, placed an infant, and it was instantly seslded to death.
