and Montgomery, Alabama, at New Orleans,
‘at Wilmington, Delaware, and at Memphis,
“Tennessee. What an act of impiety of the
Memphis people, to burn gunpowder, in hon“or of disunion, so near the grave of Andrew
Jackson! But, in the madneaa of the times,
the memory of the Sage‘ef the Hermitage
and his noble precepts and examples are forgotten and contemned, eyen by the men who
once revered him as little les» than a divinity. In Congress, both branches are busy in
concocting schemes for saving the Union.—
Contrary to our expectations, neither in the
‘Senate nor ‘the House of Representatives is
‘there ‘itch indulgence in frothy and angry
declimation. The ld and. wise heads occupy themselves in thinking, rather than talking; and the weak ‘brothers, who, in less
‘frighitful times, would have shaken the Capi“tol with rant and rhetoric, now stand, silent
and appalled, in ‘the presence of a danger
‘with ‘which they have not the skill, the abili‘ty, or-the netve to struggle. Crittenden, at
‘once the Sage of Kentucky and the Nestor
‘of the. Senate, ‘hough. bending under_ the
weight of years, is now the potent champion
‘of Union; to whom all Union-lovers kapk for
‘counsel and consolation. That the efforts
of the Union-levers will be crowned with
comiplete success is not merely our hope, it
is our most: earnest conviction. But, in order to preserve the Union, the_people of its
various sections must learn-to be charitable
‘toward each other. J
‘eents! In Boston, the headquarters of New
England Abolitienism, not very long ago, it
‘was all the fashion to rail at the slaveholders
of the south, and hold them forth as the ac‘eursed of God, too deeply crimsoned with
sin to hope for salvation. Now, matters are
reversed. The troubles atthe south have diminished the trade and industry of the north

have crumbled inte ashes—and now the Bostonians will not permit an Abolitioniat to
wag his tongue in their streets, They arenow the loudest in” professions of love and .
‘sympathy for their southern brethren and in
denunciation of the fanatics whom lately they
bugged to their bosoms. There is not such
another standard of American ethics as dollars and cents, and-notling more efficient
and direct in clarifying American intellect.
The pocket is the great regulator of the morals and polities of both north and south, and
it, and it alone, is the potent principle that
