_Gnass VaLLey FLac.—They have stuck

the splice of the topmast. The topmast is
surmounted by a gilt ball, the top of which

floats fromthe summit of the staff is a beautiful piece of buntiug 38 by 22 feet—with .
«not a Stripe erased or polluted, nor a single

AN Exciting Race.—Seldom has there
been a more exciting race, even on the farfamed Missisippi river course, than that witueesed on Friday evening, between the Antelope and Nevada. The latter left -her
wharf at nine minutes part four o’clock, and
the former shoved off exactly one minute after her.
the Antelope ran up alomg side of her rival,
and for two huurs kept exactly by her side.
The Nevrda, just before reaching, Bencia,
shot. ahead aud ran into the dock three
lengths ahead of her opponent. The race to
Benicia was exciting’in the highest degree,
and many a wuger was laid on the result.
After leaving the eld port of entry, the Nevada muintained her precedence, and reached
Sacramento at twenty-four minutes before 12
o’clcock, the Antelope flying up to her wharf
precisely four minutes thereafter. But two
— trips have ever been made between
an Francisco and Sacra’o and never a run
so rapid to Benicia. The tide was at fast
ebb, which accounted for the comparatively
Jong trip to Benicia; if it had been at the
flood, we should have reached Sacramento at
ten minutes past 11 o'clock. As it was, our
passengers were leisurely strolling through
town long before miduight.— Alta.

CAUSE AND EFFEcT.—It-deserves to be
‘remarked, says Smith, in his Wealth of Nations, that if we consult experience, the
cheapness of wines seem to be a cause, not
of drunkenness, but of sobriety. The inhabitants of the wine countries are in general the
soberest people of Europe ; witness the
Spauiards, the Italians, and the inhabitants of
the southern portions of France. The people are seldom guilty ofexcess in what is
theirdaily fare.-~ce A handful of common sense is worth
a bushel of learning.
