A TUESDAY MORNING JULY 14th Tn Ny Tt Gen. Grant’s Recorp.—No man living has better record than Gen. Grant. He was in Mexico at the battles of Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma and Monterey, as second lieutenant, and entered the city of Mexico with Gen. Scott. He was a enptain of in-. fantry whee he resigned in 1854 and retired ‘from the army. ree When this rebellion broke out he immeConfederate States. indomitable courage-and-tenacity_of the man diately offered his services, and was made ..dolonel of -an Ilinois regiment of élunteers. In 1861 he was made Brigadier General. He took Fort Henry, snd soon after Fort Donalson, one of the strongest places in the On that occasion the were signally displayed. Nothing short of ‘an unconditional surrender would satisfy him, and the garrison had to yield to his demand, At Shiloh nothing but the personal bravery of Gen. Grant saved his army and turned a panic of our soldiers into a complete route of the rebels. Since the battle of Shiloh Grant has cap~ tured-Port Gibson, takeo asion of G rand _ Gulf, GipteetcRay inne adeEated the enemy ser Mississippi Springs, fought a battle at Jackaon and took the city, defeated Pemberton. aud drove him across the Big Black, and finally, after a forty arven days’ siege, compelled Vicksburg and 27,000 prisoners to surrender, mows Harper's Ferry. 9 Washiagton, July.8.~ All precautions have. been taken to secure the capture of“ Lee's army. which 1s thought to be only a question of tune. : New York, July 9.—Dispatches say that Gens. Grant and Meade have been promos ted—the former to be Major General, the latter to be Brigadier General in the regular army. . = ‘The Tribune's special, last night, says there was heavy skiranshing to-day from daylight ‘until 3 P. Also captured 1,500 prisoners, and 2,000 horses and mul. Baltimore, 9th.—A ‘diapatch from Federick; received yesterday, siys our cavalry had asharp. fight with the rebels, six miles this side of “Hagerstown. Artillery firing was hyard this afternoon ii the direction of Has gerstown, probably an engagement with Stuart’s cavalry. ’ Our torcea at Boonsboro report the enemy’s pickets being thrown out near that point, enclosing within their lines the Antietam battle field, Shopardtown’s creysing. ‘Their muin force, however, is considerably wrat of this, and covers, three toads which meet at Willismsport. ‘Phe movements ef our army .on the front to-day are such as. will uncover fully the enewy’s position. Further information places our loss in kill-. ed and wounded, during the three days fight at Gettysburg at 5,000. The rebel loss in killed and wounded excveds ours by atleast Indianapolis, July 9—Morgan’s forces, said to number 6.000 or 8,000, crossed into Indiana and captured Corridon. Our forcea,, City and County Official Press JUBIL“ES.—The news of ‘the capture of Vicksburg and repu‘se of Lee in Pennsylvania, seems to have struck a joyful cord in the bosoms of loyxl men in all parts of the State. ‘The gloriowdshewa was received witty, manifestations of popular fivor-in almost) all the towns, from San Diego to Siskiyou. All but the Democracy were glad and made public demonstratiun of their gladness. But the Downey: Democrats had not a word of. congratulation for one another or the coun. . try on learning the glorious news. How could they rejoice when fifty per cent of their hopear went kiting with the news!’ They confidently counted upon a Federal repulse somewhere, giving them pirty capital, but Jeff. Davie failed them in luck, and up they weat, with all their imaginary huppi;noas. , We did think the State copperhead convention would indorae resolutions intenarly patriotic, just for effect, in view of recent victories, but, either the séceah out-and-oatore were too strong to allow it, or elae there -was not even a duped Union man in the con. vention to propose it. “T love the Union, but [love liberty more than that.”"—John B. Weller before the copperhead State conveniion. We believe the latter -part of that.
