< Leet For WasHok.—Mesers, 1. Williams
son, W, C. Bradley, Levy, (Cheap John’s)
10d, wad Joh : Hall, left for Virginia City, yesterork, day. ing,-on-A short excursion to the fairy
any land, where a man can faney himself a milHieo lionaire, and dream of inexhaustible lodes of
son: precious metals, whilst the next minute he is
a ut a loss to know where to get flour enough
ne to fry slapjacks for the coming meal. Washoe
the isa glorious country. The-disappointed visbse lonaries, all but crushed by the repeated exais : Plosions’ of their darling bubbles in Califorbe nig, had new life infused to their broken spira its by its alluring “ indications.” Wasnoe
ty was to them what hasheesh is to the East Inake dian, or opium to the Chinuman. But, alas!
: for most of tem, the awakening has been as
‘, painful, the reality as depressing, as is to the
ae East Indian or Chivaman the dissipation of
the ‘fumes of his favorite narcotic. But; neymS. ertheless, we repeat it, Washve is a great
country ; to many it has been the El Dorado
ed Which they had sought-in-vain in California,
fe. aud to all that have gone there it has been
oi the source of @xpect tions whith, even when
ef nov realized, have nevertheless been temporarily e.ating. ‘But all this has nothing to
do with Messrs. Williamson & Co., who go
gf Virginian City by the Henness Pass, on
th horse and mule back. A merry trip to them!

OLD BLock’s Expepirios.—Our excellent friend, A. Delano, Exq., of Grass
* Valley, and hie daughter, yesterday passed
through our City on an expedition to Sierra
Valley and other points of interest im the
mountains. .They were on horseback, with
tents, blankets, cooking utensils, grub, and
drinkables, and ‘aH-the other et eteras of
camp equipage and comiissary stores. They
intend to make the trip in soldier style,
camping in the woods and cooking their
grub a, la ‘mode du mineur. "This is the
right way to do the mountains, and we heartily wish the expeditionists a ‘glorious mareh.
Gas WorkKs.—This establishment, we are
glad to see, is progressing finely—the. brick
a ae a,
so—and we expect that in the course of two
weeks, the manufacture of gas will commence.
From the Grass Valley National, we learn
that our neighbors of Grass Vailey are also
going to be supplied with this superior and
cheap illuminating material. Messrs. Geo.
D. Roberts and 8. D. Bosworth are about to
erect gas works in that town. The National
thinks it will pay, and so do we.
ACCIDENTS, AT GRASS VALLEY. — The
(irass Valley National mentions the following
casualties, which occurred at that place during last Week :
A son of Mrs. Jones, working at the Soda
Factory, had the. ulnar artery of his left arm
severed by fulling on some fragments of glass
bottles, which inflicted a. severe cut across
the wrist. Dr. Tompkins secured the artery.
A Frenechinan, named Alexander, who
keeps a saloon, on the north corner of Main
and Church streets, whilst going into his heer
cellar in the dark, on Sunday evening last,
\ accidentally. slipped and fell, as -he supposes,
upon # broken glass bottle, in such # manner
as to produce a very severe wound upon the
right arm near the shoulder. The wound is
ubout two inches in leugth, with a puncture
extending inward to the bone, and down the
bone toward the elbow, nearly four inches.
‘The arm was dressed by Drs. Tompkins and
Harris, and is considered dangerous from its
nature and the state of the weather.
A young man, in the employ of Mr. McLaughlin, had his head badly injured, oa Friday last, by the fall of a brick from the new
edifice now being erected by Mr. M. on Main
street. One of the arteries behind the right
‘\,¢f ear was lacerated,
. ton in a manner which has
building is completed, the gasometer nearly.
te A new small-pox or pest hospital, has
been built by the city of San Francisco ut. an
expense of $700.-—There havebeen, eleven
cases of small pox treated in it Jately. ° Six
have recovered, and the rest are doing well.
A CHILD’s WisH.—** I wish I was a squirrel,”
said a little boy to his mother. Why de you wish
te be a squirrel? inquired his mother. Because
the squirrel has a grey coat that won’t catch the
dirt, and he can play as much as he pleases, and
where he pleases, and néver gets scolded for
dirtying his clothes. The mother being a sensible
woman, took the hint and furnished her boy with
@ suit to play in, and he was happyMothers give your children play ; they need it
as much as they do fuod; it is a part of their na;
ture to play. All young animals play ; the lamb,
the calf, the colt, the dog and cat, the bird, the
fish—everything. that bo life-and the power of
action must play. All“the physical organs are
developed by exercise—nature ‘has put the aed
in them for their own good’; then do not curb it,
but only direct it into proper channels.. Alas for
the children who are not -allowed to play frecly,
for fear of ‘soiling their cléthes; and the
are Inany such, especially in cities. ‘They are all
feeble, miserabie, nesoppens¢ & things. Out with
— into thesunlight and fresh air, and let them
play.
&yThere have been: 565,000 volunteers tendered to the President by responsible ‘parties,
and-it-is believed the War Department can put
100,008 mere men into the field im thirty days if
it chooses.
The Washington correspondent of the N. Y.
Times plainly intimates. that it is the intextion of
the Government to blockade the port of Charlesrobably not been
dreamed of by the Méreury. _ The idea, however,
is not original, but 1s borrowed from the Charleston rebels themselves. It is proposed to load
vessels with stoae, and sink them across the entrance of the harbor, in such.a manner as to prevent all ingress of egress, this.will allow. of the
withdrawal of all thenaval vessels now there
except one.—Sac. News.
ONE GRAND TrRUTH.—The_ London Times, in
one of its articles on American affairs, says :
‘* The Confederate States exist.by a breach of
the Constitution which was not provided for,
because it was held to be impossible. When the
impoverished, 1aisgoverned ‘and almost ruined
original States combined to form a single nationality, there can be no doubt that they had no
afterthcught. and that, though they battled on
the terms of entrance into the Union, yet when
once there they considered themselves fused into
one nation ll the elaborate argument of President Davis fails to show that the Constitution
provided the means of its own destruction, and
that, while proclaiming that it was the supreme
law of the land, itorganized a machinery for
scttinr its plainest dictates at defiance. We all
know that, from an international point of view,
the origin of Confederate States does not appear
very consistent with the laws of
political or otherwise.’’

the spirit-ranpers how many children she had.
‘* Four,’ rapped the spirit. 2
