ra MPIC 542 ‘THE SKIES ARE BRIGHT.—Never, since thie war commenced, has there been so much of promise fot the countty as now. In MemontaM.—We feel to condele with the Downey Democracy for the misfortunes they suffer because of the absence of their old and well tried leaders. Their case is peculiarly hopeless since those old constitutional Demoorats, Terry, Gwin, Austin Smith, Brooks, Charley Scott, Higley, Thorn ton and Crittenden, have gone to reinforce those other constitutional Democrats under the sway of Jefferson Davis. If there was the sign.of a chance, of the “beautiful ddctrine of compensation,” coming into play for the benefit of the party, the case of the Democracy would not be utterly hopeless as it is. But there is not the shadow of hope. While thie absence of the bell-wothers of the party weakens the’ Democracy most de. plorably here, their presence avails the Southetn Democracy nothing, because the whole kit and cargo, Jeff. Davis, Terry, Gwin aud all, are fast coming to an inglorious end. Tt is painful to imagine the pangs the Downey Democracy must feel when they realize how weak they are, by the exportation of their leadets to another and chosen field, and how futile have been all their efforts to strengthen the party South by such exportatioos Why, the number of Demetrate who “pave left this State to take part in this Conatitutional Democratic rebellion would be of essential service just now inghe way of votes and influence. Cursed be the Repiblican party that it never furnished a single rebel to offeet the losses of the constitutional Downey Democracy of California ! _. Cewrra. Paciric. RatLroap.—Gov.
