7 Beada Baily Branseriyt. TUESDAY MORNING SULLY Bist ‘Tue’ CorrerneaD Nominees.—In putting Bigler, Weller and Downey on their State Ticket, the copperheads fondly ima» gined they had done a big thing. They supposed they had'taken representative men ot . the party, and so they have. . sents &-very considerable. share of the State debt, Weller another large share, and Downey the remainder’ It is true that a small debt was created by the Democratic administration preceding Bigler’s, but Bigler. as a member of Legislature, took a hand in the Democratic management of affairs, and is readonably reaponsible to sume extent.— . At any, rate the entire debt is of Democratic origit. $Thewdministration of J. Neely Johnson more than kepteven and so has Gov. Stanford’s. During the Administration of _ Johnson, notwithstanding the bad management in the Treasury department, the expenses of the Government were paid, according to the statements of the Controller, aud it wae during Juhoson’s term of office that the reforms wees instituted by which the expenses of tne State Government were lessened and money accumulated in the trea» sury. A Legislature not Democratic placed the State ona cash basis, where it was when Weller became Governor. But whea Downey went out of office there was not a dollar to pay the expenses of the Government, and tle State was about five hundred thousand dollars deeper in debt. Democratic financiera in the Legisiature—(Downey had no more-idea-of State finances than a clam)— did not care to see that the extraordinary appropriations they were making properly called for an increase of taxation, or if they did see it, had not the common honesty to take the responsibility of their acts before the people. So long as the masses saw they were not taxed’ more heavily than usual they took it for granted that afffirs were not very badly condacted. Downey thus sherked the odium of his extravagent expenditures. Before going out of office, and ‘but just before, his State Controller and * Treasurer called upon the county treasur. , ers to pay in what money they had on hand belonging to tne State, and it was paid ia and swallowed up instantly, leaving _ the incoming administration of Stavford nothing with whieh to keep the wheels of » government going. Indeed, the outgoing _ Democrats made such thorough work uf cleaning out the treasury that the money necegsary to pay the interest.on. the State debt, and which was sacredly set apart for “the purpose, was taken to pay the salarics of the outgoing officers, It was a clean sweep, and worse, because the interest funde were robbed ahead. Such was the state of affaires when Gov. Stanford was inwugurated, The reports of the prasent State officers show that during the first year of the present State administration, something more than sixty thousand dol. lara of receipts in excess of appropriations wor saved. The Administration hua. lived within ite. means, which is more than its If these. old Democrats could come to power again, we might expect a reenactment Of the old and invariable rule. The debt, of the State would be increased — Bigler is on that tack, Weller cannot do otherwise not being morally responsible for anything, and Downey haa shown himecif number one in the debt creating business. But neither of these old public functionaries has the glimmer of a chance of com: ing to power agein.’ Bigler is ‘staler than the lager he punished in the days of of Democratic triumphs, Weller is deader than the Irishman he saw smiling on a Mexican field of battle, and Downey is worthless as one of hie ten per cent. per hotes from his greaser neigh. EW" The San Francisco Jowreal complains that eome persons are trying to injure its cirGuiition. Truly. there ie no peace for the * Por Loaic.—it was the boast of the die. It is made out of wholé cloth beyond doubt. The conduct of the rioters in sacking private houses, pillaging and murdering in the street, shows they were not men smarting under a sense of wrong, but that they were naturally. scoundrels, thieves, Fernando Wood men, copperheads, secessionists, and to cap the climax, Democrats. CuNFEDERATE Scair.—A short time be‘ Hudsoti confederate notes were worth but four cents on a dollar,in Nassau. Ninety-six percent is a pretty heavy discount. The fall of those two places has increased the price of our greenbacks about fifteen per cent. Ituught to have a corresponding ill effect upon confederate currency, and we may safely calculate, therefore, that eleven cents are paid at Nassau at the present time to induce a British subject to take a dollar of confederate currency ! : ; PRewrice’s ADVIcE.—If anybody is diss satisfied with Federal money, let him go South and get Confederate money. If any body 1s dissatisfied with United States tax~ es, let him go South and psy Southern tax es.
