Farat Accwwext av Grass VaLiey —
“ "“ gOME MATTERS.
pisorDERLY.—Uncle Sam had better call
ig the services of hie California volunteers;
for the-sery causes which make some of them
very worthless citizens, would undoubtedly
make them capital soldiers. One of them
focked in the calaboose a few evenings
ago, for disorderly conduct,” and én officer
Knorr going to pay hina his respects in his
new quarters, night befere-last, -he-found-the
son of Mars missing. On examining the in~térior-of his laxurious quarters he found that
whole had been cut thréugh the floor, which
3g about a foot above ground, by means of an
ax6, which had-been handed the prisoner from .
outside, and on further examination, found
the bold warrior under the floor,’ hid body in
‘ghorizontal position, busily employed in re.’
moving dirt enough with his axe to allow his
corpus to crawl through. He had very.nearly
dgegeeded in working himself out, when the
officer ordered him to “ fall back,” which orde? the gallant fellow obeyed, worming himself back to the calaboose through the opening he had cut in. the floor. . ;
THIRTY-FOUR GUNS were fired yesterday,
in this city, by’ the friends of John R. Mc
Connell, in honor of his nomination, as candidate tor Governor, by the Breckinridge
Democratic Convention at Sacratnente. The
fring was loud and emphatic, as though the
q@anon seemed to say that it thought Mr.
MeConnell's chances for the gubernatorial
chair as good as anybody’s. Thirty-four is a
Vnionistic number, and that many guns appeat significant of the fact that the Nevada
friends of Mr. McConnell do nat contemplate
secession as a branch of their platform, whatever may be the’platform on which he was
nominated. The cannon was worked by
. those accomplished artillerists, Messrs.: Davig and Varney, and of course, we have no
accidents to record. .
ites
EF On dit that an opposition stage line is
. tobe put on the Grass Valley road in a few
days, and the fare reduced to 50 cts. The
old line will carry passengers for nothing.
It strikes us that the travel on that road is
hardly sufficient to warrant this opposition,
The old live is justly popular, and we. fear
that. the new. comers will find it an up hill
business to compete against them.
“FP McCue’s opposition stage to Maryssille went down, yesterday morning, crowded
with passengers. The opposition is getting
along finely, and its continuance appears to
be beyond a doubt. : os
“More Opposrrion.—If ‘competition is
the life of trade,” the carrying business ought:
to be in a highly vigorous condition. We understand that a new saddle train, the headquarters of which are at Mr. Laneaster’s
stable, in this city, has been started between
this city and Orleans Flat.’ There is already
another saddle train on this road, besides the
regular stage line.
-'Teaminc.—A wagon loaded with eightyone hundred pounds of provisions, and drawn
by eight mules, left Nevada a few days ago,
and arrived at Dog Valley on Monday last.
Nodifficulty was experienced in going over
the Henness Pass road and when it is completed it will be the best thoroughfare in the
mountains.
Tur First Brick or THE SEASON.—Preparations are being made by Mr. Pedro Scutti,
atthe corner of Pine »nd Commercial streets,
for'the erection of a-brick store, which, if we
mistake not, is the first brick structure
érected in Nevada this season. The building
is to be nly one story high.

She was acquitted on the ground of insanity.

_.FReicut ror WAsnon. — Twenty-two
mules, belonging to Mr. Mau, heavily loaded
with freight, lelt yesterday
corréspondént in that place:
(Tuesday) at the French Lead, North Star
Company Mine,” situated a few miles below
Grass Valley, on the Auburn road. Joseph
Rodda, in company with Charles Dunn and
three others, were coming up out of the dig-gings.on~the incline, and when part of the
way up, they heard and saw the car coming
down. All got out of the way, excepting
Rodda, who was some eight or ten feet behas one gon, a young man, ‘mining at Iowa]
ing, in.chiarge .
“A fatal accident uccurred last evening.
hind thé othérs. He saw the car too late,
and it struck him in the side and broke sev.
eral of his ribs and injured him in the head.
The ropé breaking was the cause'df the car
ceming down so, and it continued on ite
course to the bottom of the shaft, and broke .
all to pieces on the rocks~below. His partners brought Rodda to the surface, and no
doctor being handy, they thought they would
bring him to town on a litter. When about
half a mile from the mine, on their way -to
town, he died. His age was about 40, and he
Hill, who was telegraphed to come over.
The deceased has mined here and at Iowa
Hill for several years, and bad saved up
about $15,000 00, and intended going home
next month, to his family in Cornwall, England. He owned two or three shares in the
“North Star Min. Co., and was a sober and
hard working man.”
THEATRICAL.—We have stated that Mrs.
W. C. Forbes, with a talented company, intended visiting Nevada shortly. That lady,.
as alse Mr. McKean Buchanan, is now at
Marysville, and he is expected to accompany
herto Nevada. If both come we shall be
favored with a peculiarly strong histrionic
corps. :
—_ «.
Row.—Two pugnacious individuals, one
named Spamsh Pete and the other Dutch
Chris, got into a scrimmage, day before yesterday, in consequence of a dispute over a
game of cards. Officer Knerr interfered in
time to prevent any serious damage, and
brought them before Judge Kendall who fined
them six dollars apiece.
IMPROVEMENTS IN GRASS VALLEY.—
Grass Valley ia steadily improving this year.
Three new brick houses were started there
last week, besides those already in progress
of erection.
Tan GRAS“ VALLEY NATIONAL.—We
understand that the proprietors of the National contemplate making that paper a semi
or tri-weekly; after the Istof August. Mr.
W. B. Ewer is in San Francisco, purchasing
the necessary material.
INFANT DruMMER.—A large crowd was
assembled on Broad street, yesterday, to witness the performances of Mast. Chas. Miller,
the snare drummer. ‘ Charlie” is but four
years old, still he handles the sticks with as
much dexterity as anold drummer. He hails
from Dry Creek, where his father is engaged
in ranching.
sali
WaTer FOR JuHN CHINAMAN. — Mr.
Marsh is extendiag his pipes along Commercial street, thus enabling John to enjoy the
benefits of his water works, in common with
the rest of mankind.
More SLAves.—Over two. hundred and
fifty Chinese men and women arrived at SanFrancisco, on, Sunday, from Hongkorig.
