Greene, re‘gently elected to the command of Conipany H, raised in this city, dated gt San Francisco, July 28, which states that Colonel Lippitt is egnfident of receiving immediate orders from into active service. Of course, lie is anxious that thowe-who have enrolled their names shall hold themselves ready to march at a momegt’s notice. Captain Greene, with the other commissioned officers of Company H,. struction in the school of the soldier, school ‘of the company.and school of the battalion. All the efficets of the regiment, or nearly all, gre now undergoing a course of elementary drill, to fit them for their respective positions. Our thanks are due to W. K. Spencer's Biterary Depot, Grass Valley, for a bountiful assortment of periodicals, among which “is the ‘California Magazine: and Mountainéer,” an excelle mthly, full of fun and fine writing, edited bythose tiptop literary geniuses;.J. E. Lawrence~and J. Brooks. oF ° ae Tue Lecrures.—Rey. T. Starr King, who was prevented from appearing last evening, ag advertised, will certainly commence hia lectures this evening at the theater. District Court, July 30th.—Smith & Clow vs. Bouke. , Judgmententered in favor of plaintiffs for $221 80 aud costs Briggs et-al. vs. Bowen et al. Verdict for plaintiff assessing damages at $300. Ee The Marysville Appeal having been accused by the Sonora Age, of “ encouraging -sefusade against slavery, under pretense of sporting the Government,” pronounces the secusation a gross untruth, and asserts that itand “the entire Republican press of California are concerned only for the Government and Union im this struggle. Slavery has resorted to the ordeal of battle and can look out-foriteelf. 1f it chooses to knock its brains out against the Union, that is its own afhir. Government will not push it on or hold it back ; but will fight solely for its own preservation.” nities YANKEE DoopLe—A tune similar to Yankee Doodle was in use in England previous to the reign of Charles I, and during the revolution m which that monarch was dethroned,“it was sung by the Cavaliers to and among others to a set entitled “* Nankee Doodle.” During the expedition against the French posts of Niagara and Frontenac, in 1775, a physician in the British army altered the old tune of ‘‘ Nankee: Doodle,” tad gave to it the name of “‘ Yankee Doodle,” inderision of the New England volunteers, and. prevailed upon them to sdopt it, representing to them that it was very much used and highly valued upon the continent of Europe. It may have beeu. as it is said, “played by an Italian fifer at the evacuation Boston,” but it did nof originate ea that occasion. Ont Efrect oF THE War.—The Sierra Democrat. philosophically remarks; The young men of the North and South are enlisting and going to the wars by squads, companies, battalions and regiments. The virgins of tne North and South are sitting by the old firesides, reading, hearing stories of war, waiting for the return of the boys, sighing heigho! twirling their thumbs, and making a virtue of necessity. > Advices were received by the last Pony tating that msurance rates were advancing, and that offices at last accounts declined naming terms for the present, on account of Jeff. Davis’ privateers. ~ STABBING AFFRAY AT JAMISON.—On Sunday, July 2ist, Jacob Oliver, at Jami‘on City, Plumas county, received several tabs in a general affray. He was conveyed to thé Sierra County Hospital. Wit Propapty Recover —It is supthat James McKeever, who was shot Chips Borland, County Judge of San Louis Obispo, will recover, though shot ir the breast. Borland, after committing such & serious crime, is still retaining his seat on the bench.‘> Frank Hussey and T. M. Harvey were wrested in San Franciseo, a few days since, FJ: R. McConnell, candidate for Goveter, speaks in San Francisco to-night. {The amount of “oaleseed” in the State ‘Tietsury,at the close‘of business on Saturday last, was $147,05572. “*€9P The Marysville Ezpréss learns that ne & humped brutes pos of te rin , are m Tising at four o'clock, retiring at sunset, drinking water only, and that but once in ten days, when two buckets will suffice each animal. ‘They-are~very healthy, ugly and tractable ; and the Alta, from which paper k6 we condense these facts, inti that ers ougtit to experiment with ceria ats Sierra Nevada.— Appeal. : << UNFOUNDED.—We see it atated in some of the Republican papers, that Mr. MeConnell, our candidate for Governor, is a relative of Jefferson Davis. This, we are informed, is an error. Mr. McConnell is not related to, or in any way connected with Davis. The probable source of the error is the fact, that Mr. M. was reared by a brotherin-law, who is nearly connected by marriage with the family of Colonel Davis. We make this correction by authority.— Marysville Express. THE ENGLISH ARIsToCRACy of modern times is founded on wealth, to.a great extent ; and as cotton manufacturing is one of the chief sources of wealth in Great Britain, we see why the arjstocracy take so to the cotton side of secession in this country. The Live 1 Times says: ‘“ The cotton manufacture is oming the greatest power in England—perWaps the world. The men engaged in it are making fortunes almost by a leap. In wealth they far exceed the old feudal aristocracy, and every estate, now-a-days, whieh finds its way into the market is snatched up eagerly by some parvenu cotton spinner, the length of whose purse goes a great way.to atone for the brevity of his pedigree.” AN INTERESTING CusToM.—A recent African traveler, Mr. Petherick, tells some funny stories. One tribe that he encountered used to steal histobacco aud smoke his rare He filled a pipe, placing among the tobacco some gunpowder, and told them that the pipes were so indignant at be'ng used by them, that if smoked again they would evince their displeastre.\. One of the chiefs, in the traveler’s absence,“ tried it on’’ again—and the pipe exploded into fragments. After this the traveler was looked on asa prophet, and his goods were not meddled with.—Another tribe had a singular mode of salutation. The chief spit in his face. At first he deemed it an insult, and thought of knocking the chief down; but contented himself with spitting back. This, as it proved ,was the right thing to do, and it was received as-a civil response to a courteous overture. THE CHINESE PLAGUE.—Hardly a week passes but we have afresh importatien of Chinese. They come-into the mountains by the wagon load—consigned, like chattels, to some principal man of one of the various companies, who examines the invoice, and takes charge of them by: the: head, as he would a drove of sheep or hogs, and ships them off again in small lots, to suit the demands of their widely-diffused system of slavery, The Chinese quarter of this town 1s rapidlation of filth about the shanties is appalling. The whole atmosphere is poisoned by villainous smells, so offensive, that it ig at the risk of contracting a fever that one passes through the streets or alleys upon which this miserable population have located. White men begin to complain that they are interfering with tneir labor, in the field, the workshop and other industrial pursuits not heretofore included among their occupations. This state of affairs should be remedied. The legislature must do something for us. If they cannot be entirely excluded under the daw, an apprentice act should be passed, secufing their labor at a. small pittance to white men, in menial service. and postively forbidding them to-come in competition with mechanics, agriculturists or miners.—Hydraulic Press: ce A man is obliged to keep his word when nobody will take it. eeoatans Secret Orders, Nevads R.
