pertie a mere pastime; such persons may
sprinkle with impiitity, but those who are
not thus supplied, and those who have more
ground aré more interested to know when
they should begin to use the water.
The objection to early irrigation is, that
the new roots that are formed will not run
down so deep as if the ground above were
dryer. For trees and vines, I think this very
important, as we may control to avery great
extent the direction aud depth of the roots,
and we know that if the roots run deep they
will not be 60 readily affected by the dry
weather of summer.
T have had flowering plants in beds where
. they were thoroughly irrigated frem ‘the
beginning of the dry weather, and others of
the same kind self-sown, and never irrigated,
that flourished equally as well as the others
much of that time, had I neglected my beds
for a short time only, they would immediately havé shown the éffect of the ne glect ; and:
had the neglect been protracted, they-would
large turnips to grow whore I am sure that
neither by accident er otherwise did any
water reach them, exéepting such as came
up from the earth beneath them. Another
fact is inexplicably tome: If you once irrigated some of thoee plants that have long
thrived without water applied to the surface,
they must be. well cared for afterwards, or
they will suffer more than before ; or, rather,
their suffering will commence soon after the
irrigation, if itia not continued. I have observed this of the smaller plants only.
Thave Known inelon vines to grow admirably till the earth about them seemed to be
entirely deprived of moisture. They did net
bear any fruit; but if they had been watered
properly from the time of blooming, I believe they would have done well. I know a
-melon vine to grow on a manure heap, and
to produce fine fruit without any irrigation.
One thing is very important where water .
1s not applied till late, and, indeed, in all
cases except where frequent sprinkling is
resorted to; that is, to keep the surface dirt
well pulverized, by means of the hoe or
rake. Itistrue that the ground thus stirred
will become thoroughly dry; but this layer
of fine dry earth, is nearly. equal toa mufching of saw-dust or straw. It will prevent
rapid evaporation front the earth beneath it.
I have hastly written this. communieation
in the hope that the suggestions may be a
benefit to many, and that others whg dissent
from the views here expressed will give ue
the reasons for it. Thereeis nothing that ie
connected with the culture of the soil that
is more important than irrigation ; and if we
can be favored with the vpimens und exper
ience of those who have practiced it, the favor will no doubt be greet. We may profit
‘hot only by our success, but by our mistakes
