i re _ which eclipsed the performances of the flatFare Fionr at Grass VALLEY.—Our enterprising neighbors know how to get up Sunday amusements. In our stupid town, if agentieman indulges in a little out of the way performance, he is forthwith threatened with, if not marched to, the calaboose. No such puritanical restraints are -imposed on the free and happy citizens.of Grass Valley. If two men chohse to engage in & discussion, whether pohtical or otherwise, they are at full liberty to convince, each other, ne matter if they_use clubs or fists for the purpose, in“stead of mere words. On Sunday evening last, two gentlemen got into a controversy, which soon warmed into an interchange of fistiearguments.. The friends of one of the parties took a hand in the contest, whereupon sympathizers of the other party came to the rescue, when the whole party adjournéd to the street, and went at it in_a manner boat men of the olden time in an Arkansas free fight. Seme twenty-five men took a hand in the muss, and they nearly all came out of it with bunged eyes arid bloody noses. No weapons more dangerous thar elubs were used, and ‘the sport finally terminated by the withdrawal from the ring of each of the participants, and as fast as his hash was settled. Recruitine.—Mr. H. A Greene has already evrolled the names of several fine specimens of youngananhvod,at his recruiting station in this city. How the work of enrollment is progressing, at his North San Juan. Station, we have not learned. To-day Mr. Greene goes to Grass Valley to open a reeruiting station there. There is an abundance of genuine patriotism and no lack of the right sort of chivalry in Grass~ Valley and that town, no doubt, will furnish some fine soldiers. Mr. Greene’s object is to raise a full company from Nevada county. The following is the form of muster-roll which _ the volunteer is required to subscribe : Francis J. posses Colonel ; _ James N. OLsey, Lieut. Col. James F. Curtis, Major. We, the undersigned, hereby enroll our& selves in Company H, of the above named . . Regiment, to be organized under-the laws of the State of California, and the services of said iment to be tendered te-the United States Government. . The terms of enlistment shall be in accordance with the requirements for veluateer troops at the time we are mustered into the service of the United States ; it being understood that six. months shall be the shortest period of enlistment. San Francisco, June 3a, 1861. ' aoUNGALLANT.—A brutish fellow, yester-. NV day, undertook to amuse himself by beating three Chinese women on Commercial street. His fun was soon spoiled by officer Knerr, who lodged him in the alaboose. Fourta or Juty.—The committee ap. . pointed to circulate the subscription list for the celebration of the coming Fourth had in the neighborhood of two thousand dollars subscribed last evening. — Omisston.—In our report of the proceed' ings of the Repuplican County Convention, held in this city; on Saturday last, we omitted the name of W. H. Smith, of Washington township, who was selected as a Delegate to the Rupublican State Convention. —— Queer Ibe of Excess —Two young men, lately, in New York, undertook to see which one possessed the greatest internal capacity, and to test the matter, aggreed to eat raw clams, each to eat until one could hold né more. The victor ate one hundred and sixty ; the vanquished hero gagging at the one hundred and forty-nintb clam, when he gave up the contest, remarking that he could eat more. but “did not want to make & hog of himself.” {@# Anably writen communication from North San Juun, signed ‘“‘ Union,” came to hand yesterday, but its very great length, and pot its subject matter, precludes its insertion in the TRANSCRIPT. Our talented correspondent ought to learn two things ;viz. that “brevity is the soul of wit,” and that our paper is not os big as a bedquilt.” Ge Vanity Fair's advice to volunteer (Printers, if they happen to fall in with a type of the Baltimore plug-ugly, anywhere, under aay circumstances, is—don’t forget to ‘“‘douEF Men have vot altered materiall ly since Shakepears said: ‘To be honest, as this = ‘the people of this county, but who prefers addressing us over the signature of ‘‘ Miner,” COPPER IN NEVADA COUNTY. From s gentleman, extensively known to we, yesterday réceived a package of specimens of pure virgin copper, taken from the claims of Hiscox, Lewis & Co., Buckeye Hill, Sweetland. Our correspondent, who dates his communication at Sweetland, June 6, says: I notice that-the city (on sei a uently alluding to the copper discoveries in Calaveras and perhaps other southern counties, while we of Nevada are not supposed to be such a brazen sort of mners. Yet it has been the misfortune, perhaps, of the parties alladed to, to find quite an extensive amount of virgin cepper in their claims. ’ This metal is found in slate bed-rock of a light green color, that underlies » gravel deposit of seventy feet in depth. The ledge or seam frum which the copper is taken varies from.ten to fifty feet in width, and may . prove to be one of the richest mines of this metal found on this coast. There: has some of this copper assayed (in gold) as much as $1,25 per oz. The parties in cleaning up their sluices for gold — find from thirty te forty pounds of this metal— whi'e there is: always much of the metal bright—so. that it amalgamates readily with xuicksilver—and is not so easily separated fromgold.: This ledge can be traced on the surface, for miles, and perhaps when fairly tested— if the metal proves to contain such a per cent. of gold—there will be a “copper mania” in this sober-minded community. Yours, &c., ar A Writer for the New Orleans Picayuve ventilates his ire upén General Butler andthe Massachusetts troops as follows: ‘¢ All the Massachusetts troops now in Washm are negroes, with the exception of two or three drummer boys. Gen Butler. in command; is a nativeof Liberia. Onr readers may recollect old Ben, the barber, who kept a shop in Poydas street, and emigrated to Liberia wit 1 a feed * competence. General Butler is his son. Pourine In.—If as many Chinamen emigrate to other portions of the State as arrive weekly at Norsh San Juan, California will soon be overrun with them. The Chinese uarter is daily undergoing enlargement to'afford the varlets accommoions. Several new shanties have lately been ;and even with these additions o: shelter, some of the dingy new-comers are compelled to bivouoc.
