STAR-GAZING.—-Thosé persons who looked through the telescope on Saturday evening say the sight was wonderful: Jupiter appeared as large as the moon, and showed three of his sattelites quite ee le pia. nly. Saturn shows beth her rings, but being in the same plane, with the side or edge towards us, appear as one; like the boy's picture of the’ house and pig, with the pig behind the house. The moon appears increased-one hundred and twenty-five to one; and the line of mark from hght to shadow. The rough jagged tops of her mountains appear conspicuously by the -reflected brightness. LippiT?’s ReGimext.— A letter. from Col. Lippitt to Mr. Greene, of the Nevada recruiting station, dated 13th inst., has beer shown us, from which we learn that ten companies will form the regiment, and that eight companies have beenalready organized. Six of these companies have been raised in San Francisco, one in Sacramento, and one in Oroville. There are several other companies almost ready to organize, among which is that of Nevada county, and the two that ean offer themselves first will be accepted. There are companies enough in process of formation, according to Col. Lippitt, to form a respectable battalion, after the ten companies, necessary to form his regiment, have been aecepted. Besides the Nevada county company, there is one being raised at Auburn, one at San Jose, one at Bangor, and one at Poverty Bar. to. see the Nevada county company mastered into the Lippitt regiment; and, therefore, " those who think of joining it ought to make up their minds quick. Not a great many more names are required to the roll to make itafalleompany. The. Lippitt regiment. is sure to reach the seat of war. ATTEMPT TO Fire THE Ciry.—An attempt to fire the city was madé, on Saturday night last, which, but for the providentia: discovery of the fire by Mr. Jas. Munroe’ while yet in its incipiency. would, in all prob. = ability, have swept the whole of the upper part of Broad street. As Mr. Munroe was going home, at ten o’clock. on Saturday night he discovered an anusuzl! light in Mr. Hoel’s stable. Suspecting something wrong, he gave the alarm and ruthed into the stible. When there, he discovered a lot of lining, belonging to another house, which had been saturated with camphene. brought into the stable, . and set on fire. Fortunately, it had made but little progress and was easily put out This, we aré credibly informed, is the second attempt, within two weeks, to fire that portion of the town. , T. His especial partisaus are not alone in yielding the tribute of respect to the departed.statesman. The announcement of his death was unexpected and startling, for the previous artival of the pony brought assurances of his convalescence. What effect, if any, this unlooked for event will have on the party, in thie State, who have adopted his name as a distinctive appellation, is more than can now.be eonjectured, Their State Convention is to be held on the 4th of July. That will test their status. Dr. Bassett’s Circus COMPANY played to a full house on Saturday evening last. We think there could not have been less than one thousand spectators present, »nd we believe that every one was perfectly pleased with the evening's entertainment. This circus comprises some of the best’ acrobatic performers in the United States; and their extraordinary feats are executed with a grace and facility which relieves the audience from the fears incident to the witnessing of breakneck pertormances. We bespeak for them a successful tour through our mountain towns. a aust Secret Orders, Masons, Nevada Kodge, No. 13Meets at Masonic Hall. on Broad street, every Saturday evening.— Regular communications second Saturday of each month.
