. orWEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 18.

Fourtu oF JuLY CeLepeation.—We
are happy to announce that'steps have already
fren taken which will sure a proper celeSration of the next national anniversary. Not
«nly have the different, fire companies. ap«
pointed committees which are to meet in
wee wens eee
.
“rder te come to a proper understanding, bug .
. the citizens have also moved in the matter
and appuinted a committee which is to act in
“concert wtth the firemen, and we have no
doubt that the programme which will be
adopted by them will be worthy of the oc
casion, The tollowing are the gentlemen
appuinted by the fire companies and citizens ;
Protection Hook and Ladder Company—
Geo. W. Welch, L. C. Wiekes and N. P.
Brown. :
Nevadw Hose Company No 1—M. H. Funston, G. A. Chureh, L. W. Williams.
Pennsylvania Engine Co. No. 2—F. HFisher, Chief Kngineer; G. Schmidtburg; P.
Muleahy ; O. E. Green.
Cadete—Dewitt Tisdale, Dennis Hunt and
J.H. Stebbins a
Citizens’ Committee — T. P. Hawley, E.
Block and Chyles Kent.
We are requésted to state that the above
named gentlemen will meet at the Theatre
this afternoon at four o'clock, in order te
come a proper understanding as to the measures tobe “adopted: We shall publish thie
result of their deliberations.
War tn ArRrica. — These are troublous
and pugilistia times. To nee the expressive
language of a colored friend of eurs: “ the
~ utmosphere am chuck full of musses."* Two
sons of Ham, Messrs. Kinkhead and Sailor
Jack, affected by the prevailing influenze, got
into a wordy “ howulty” a few days since, in .
the course of which Mr. Kink applied an
epithet to Mr. Jack which was highly disrespecttul to his (Mr. Jack’s)maternal progenitor, und, per consequenee, not very com“\ plimentary to Mr. Jack himself. This latter
\
f
ynuding to the impulse of the moment, picked
up a brick which he foolishly hurled at Mr.
Kiik’s head. The only result of this hostile
act was the destruction of a useful brick and
the incensing of Mr.’ Kinkhead who swore
dire vengeance. The opportunity to gratify
this desire on the part of Mr. Kinkhead pre. ..
sented itself day before yesterday, when Mr.
Jack went past his house on Spring street.
To make # long story short Mr. K.,no sodner
perceived his enemy than he ‘‘ mounted” him.
Long and bloody was the battle; the wool
flew and shins suffered terrible excoriations.
Kinkhead hed the advantage in weight but
Jack had more “science.” This latter prevailed at last and Mr. Kinkhead came out of
the fight with his kinks straightened out, and
indebted to the generosity of his adversary
in not having his good looks ruined for weeks
te come, as Mr. Jack afterwards remarked
that he did not wish to black his faee too d—d
bad.

HANLON BROTHERS.—We take pleasure
in stating the services uf the celebrated Hanlon Brothers have been secured to give eclat
to the Fourth of July in this city. George
5S. Peirce & Co. bave made ‘satisfactory ar.
rangements with the troupe and they are to
appear on the night of the 3d and twice on
the 4th of July. A Pavilion of wood willbe
constructed to accommodate them ,150 by 50
feet and 40 feet high, capable of seating 2,500
people. The Hanlon Brothers will exhibit
nowhere else in Nevada county while they
remain in California, aud, therefore, it becomes us all, if we wish to see these won
derful prodigies to be on hand when they
come.
The Hanlon Brothers are beyond question,
in gymnasts and acrobats, far ahead of any
that have ever appeared in the world. They
went to Paris, net long since, and astonished
old professors of their art, themselves. At
San Francisco they have been drawing crowde
fortwo months To know what the body of
a man can do one must see the Hanlon Bros.
and wonder.

TREES DyinG.—Our correepondent, T
A.5., is not entirely correct in his article on .
~ Trees Dying. We have seen trees that have
not been irrigated or pruned at all standing
20 & dry soil, that have been amen oy what
we termed the “frozen sap blight’’ in-a former article. The other remarks of T. A
S. are, we think, perfectly correct. a
RoaD ConTrRacr.—The Board ef Trus.
tees have awarded the contract for constructing the road connecting with the Pine Street
Bridge at the South end, to Mr. Getebell, for
$350; the werk te be completed by the let
