The stories of immense strikes, and the great richness of the néw country carried off our miners by . the crowd to the silver region. Prospecting in this county was almost entirely given up. business was stagount and everything looked gloomy. London and Liverpool are the two great re. ceiving ports of American petruleam—over 1,000,000 of gations having been sent to each f these places at the date stated. In addition. to the above, 3,353 608 gallons have been shipped from Portland, Basten, Philadelphia and Baltimore, making a total of 10,~ 756,047 gnilone.
