Hexness Pass Tuxnprke.—The impor“tance of thia road to this section of country
nas been demonstrated time and again, and,
we have no doubt, is properly understood by
most of our citizens. , A company ef gen~“ttenien of our city organized themselves, last
. __fall,fer the purpose of accomplishing. the
task of building a turnpike, and accomplished
a very creditable amount of work. For some
. reason which we do not know, however, the company has not teen getting along
satisfactorily; and we regret to see the work
advertised to be'sold at Sheriff's sale. We
suspect, however, that the road will be
redeemed by the company, and the work prosecuted with renewed vigor. At. avy rate,
we have the satisfaction of knowing that,
whether the e«mpany r-deem it or not. the
road will be finished, as parties are now on
the ground, to ascertain the exact. amount of
labor necessary to complete it, and stand
naly to buy it whenever it fs offered for
sale. We hope arrangements may soon be
made which will eause the work te be soon
put through. Now is the time for it.

Po.ice. — Officer Knerr, on Thursday
evening, found Jim Macky engaged in belligerent action, at the Golden Gate Saloon, with
Mr. Mau, the keeper of the aforesaid institution, who, not fancying Jim’s peculiar actions
had attempted to eject him from his premises. Knerr escorted Jim te the calaboose,
and, yesterday morning, Justice Kendall put
him on the debtor’s side of his ledger to the
tane of six dollars? Jim, not having so much
ehange-about him, Knerr locked him up for
a three day’s meditation on the folly of fighting saloon keepers.

as one in the South remains in heart true to

_A Sticur Mistake.—A ‘few months

After grieving for a number of weeks a wrigh’

upon a lady of his acquaintance and requested to spexk a word with her in private —
Thinking that she was about to receive a

“Myrrha,” said he. with dowucast eyes, as
he took her hand, “ you knew my. wite !”
* Certainly.”
“It is not good for man to be alone!”

‘“My dear,” he said after a leng pause,
“‘T’'lleome to the point at once. I have a
proposal te make.”
“A proposal?” She blushed and covered
her face with her hands.
“Yes; I have concluded to write my wife’s
biography. Now I have had but little skill
in literary exerciser, andif you will correct
my manuscript, and write the headings of
the chapters, Fwill give you five dollars.”
She sprang from his side and her eyes flashed with anger.
