The anton PaPETs . cumaeribed we omit the stete Ticket fur the presee am wrangement will be made by ihe ity ticket is nominsted by whi¢ for the names of the State we shall have room form Meanwhile all ue Lare SvaTe Cosvention —The regult of the late State cenvention is before the people, for their verdict, Of the ticket we sball svy, that it 1s composed of men of excellent character, and ovly tuleratle ubilie Hes. We make on exception so far rate Supreme Court ia ecnerrned. The Judicial part of the ticket could not-have been much improved by any change. Shafter, Sawyer the const. It was a happy circumstance that such a conventivn ‘as that recently ase . . sembled at Sacramento put those three men upon the judica! ticket. Bod as many of the delegates were; disposed as thay were to trade and tenffic, they wete yet not so aban. doned as to reject for pelf or any other sort ef consideration the best begul minds of the ‘State, when they cnme to name candidates for Supreme Judges. Io other respects the convention was not 60 just of so fortunate. For the pulitical offices, fair men have been chosen, but not one of marked abilities, unless we except the candidate for Attorney General, who, though avery young man, is clained by his friends to bea gentleman of great promise. As stumpers, probably Higby and Cele will be able to do some service with McCullough, but there ie nota man on. the ticket who ean speak for the masses like Sargent, Pix" ley, Weeks or Stanford. We shail see it when they come to muke the canvass of the There is a great moral to be derived from the late convention—a moral that a portion of the party aces, feels and appreciates sorely. It was expected that in consideration of the sudden movement of the supporters of . Phelps to the side of Connese Inst winter, thatsuch suppotters would be “taken care of,” to use the expression of one of the Phelpalenders. The result shows that puls iticians will not do to tie to at all. Thus, for instance, our friend Chellis, after all his pertinacity for Phelps and acquiescence in the transfer to Conhess, had but a peor show when a Conness Deinocrat came against him for Lieut. Governor, Parks, of Sutter found himself in the same awful fix when he wantoda nomination for Congress. The erudite and eloquent Shatnon of Plumas was too many for him, slinply because Conness wanted it se. : ge: Then there was the supple Nixon of Sa to—one of the old guard,” as eur friend Pixley would aay. He had s'ood the ‘brunt of rotten egge and contumely in days _ agonoe. He had beena staunch friend to Phelps, but went, over to Connese last wine ter, all the time, professing to be a great friend to the man his city wae most indebted to, but to whom he never gave a vote though he prowieed faithfully enough to doao. He was nowhere when pitted agninet Redding who justified the rotten egg argament of the past, and who had been one of the groome~. men of John Connvees in the Senator al race. Caleb’ T. Fay, ond our friend Perkins met with asimilar fate. They, too, were of the “old guird” but who went to the embraces of the nut distributor and were punish« ed. Frank Fargo, too, fell like a log for bes ao and everywhere in the Senato~ ria : contest. Our friend Avery of the Appeal, who evdeared himself to Coan‘ss by complimentary notioes that kith-d Sargent, was swapped of by ede leastion from the county of Yuba -and by San Francisco, becnuse Low must have the votes of San Joaquin. But we can't begin to tell the beauties of the late State convention. Suffice it to say, that there is little inita action to make us sore-headed at all. The only men in the . party who can afford to growl, and that in georet, are the Phelps men who went over to Conuess, last winter with the expectation of beitig taken care of.” The lamb obtained the protection of the vulture; and how bitterly everybody bewails the fate of the an--imal. that by good luck might nave gi.wa to become a sherp! ae, ti Hon. A. A. Sargent delivers an ora~ ~ -tiomat Michigan Bluff gn.the 4th of July. Favors.+We are indebted to Stratman & Co. for a who bundle of Eastern magazines and pictorials for which erprising news dealers have our Cautronyta.—The clipon from . WaT MIGHT HAVE BEEN.—From the . rewarks of well infurmed citizens from all . parts of the Biante, whom we conversed with had our towuemun, Mr, Sargent, allowed his ‘. name to be used 46 4 eandidate for Goyetoer. two months before the convention assembled at Sacramento, he could not bave been bextfens” We wry farther, thot wo O16” feed” go tur to be convineed that enca is the fact.— Why, then, did he not suff-r himself to ben candidate in time, and why did he allow hia HWie'to'be used in” the convention at all: when he must do so with grent uneqrtainty? We know enough of the facts to anawer these questions. Inthe first place, as we hive iu formet articles stated. Mr. Surgeatdid not desite to become a candidate for any pesitum. Phat of iterl held him back from the coutest. But Stanford was a vanlidnte for Governor, and he had been friendly to Mr. Sargent’s election to the Senate list winter, That -wasenough. Sargent utterly retuged, though pressed by letters fom all quarters, to become a candidate in opposition toa Triend who had proved atriend on an ex!raordi: ary ocension. He was determined that no one should reproach tim with ingratitude in the gubernatorial contest. All men will appreeinte and honer bia attitude, ‘The vote of Nevada county was not given to Sar‘gent in the spirit of opposition te Gov. Stanford. Why did Mr. Sargent allow his name to be used ut Sacramento? There was a reapeefable element in the convention thag did not want to vote for the instruments of John Conness, and they wanted a. candidate. — Woes it the duty «f any good citizen, bower: er iinpolitie it might be to. become a candi» date, to refuse the wishes of that element? Mere politicians might object, but any reapectable body of men has a right to use any man's name for positions of public trust and honor, But, there were other reasons influencial with politicians. Mr. Sargent had pledged to him at one time as many as 131 votes, or within five of a nomination. The friendly feeling « xhibited by delegations that made no pledges, and the op‘uion thyt prevuiled that only a little time was needed to cunvass the delegations to find enough votes hie friewds to insist on his going befur+ the convention, with the acquiescence of Gov. Stanford, as a candidate. But his vote was materially reduced by trades of various kinds Thus, the San Franciseo delegation purchased with twenty-five of their votes for State Printer. the nine votes of San Joas quin for Low. This is but one instance uf . A Pic the faithlessness of delegstes. In thie way twenty-six Sargent votes were obtained for Low. Aa no attempt waa made to offeet this work by counter trading. Sargent’s vote was reduced to 105. While the voting was going -on, some delegates favorable to Sargent, seeing the inevitable result, voted tor Low, teducing Sargent’s vote to 93, when the result was declared. It_will be seen thot, looked upon in ® fair light, the position of Mr. Sargent was all along honorable to himself aud considerate tu his friends. To those who like to think well of human nature there was mucha the futhlessness of delegntes that was ir concerned, Mr. Sargent ia satisfied, as it accords with bis tuate tor private life. Districr Jupeesup.—The delegates frown Placer county ta the Union State convention were not expressly authorized by the Placer county convention -to nominate a candidate for Judge of the 13th Judicial District, but they agreed with the dele~ gates from this county upon the nomination of the Hen. T. B. McFarland the present incumbent, subject to the approval of the Placer Central Committee, There is no_other candidate for the nomi~ nation from cither county; and as Placer county hae already nommated her county ticket, her central committee’ will, in ail epee, tuttly the nomination of Judge ¢Faflaud without the formality of calling another county convention expressly for that perpeée, Toe nomination, however, . will not-be formally anvounced until the Central Committee ot t bas acted in the premisea, ; Rac&.—An advertisement of races ‘over the Glenbrook race-track for the 4th of five day's sport is provided for. ~eitine FourTa or Jvzy Baut.—L.
