FLsG ON Prety HiLt—PaTRiorism oF
THe Lapies. — An interesting ceremony
took place, on Saturday evening, at the. Nevada Flouring Mill, ‘the details of which we
tenaty of the patriotism which animates the,
ladies of that important portion of our town,
and the handsome fhanner. in which they can
accomplish a patriotic object. The zeal with
which the gentlemen of . that district responded to the call was, no doubt, highly:
stimulated by the fact of its coming from
such a fair source, as the ceremony war chuaracterized by that genuine spirit of patriotism,
harmony, and good feeling, which the tadies .
alone can impart to any occasion. But to
Hil} aud the surrounding neighborhood, con.
sisting of Mrs. E. G. Witte, Mrs: J.-Clark,
Mrs. J. N. Turner, Mrs. Getchell, Mrs. John-kon, Mrs. Irish, Mrs. Edward Brown, Mrs.
E. Stout, Mrs. D. 8. Tallman, Mrs. Me
Mrs. Humphrey, Miss Nancy Clark and Miss
Anna Trish, met_at the residence of Mrs.
Jonathan Clark, on Friday last, to make arrangements for thé manufacture of an American flag, which they were intent on having
raised in their neighborhood. A. place near
the Nevada Flour Mill having been decided.
by them as the point from which they could
all best see its graceful folds floating to the
breeze, a messenger was dispatched. to the
gents of the flour mill, informing them of
their resolve, and instructing them to procure ‘a staff by the following (Saturday)
evening ‘The corps of-this mstitution, consisting of Messrs J. Clark, E.W Bigelow, D.
F. Coll, O. Torson, Jas. Brown, J. Kelly and
Mr. Wilder, lost no time in obeying the summons; and, indeed, there was none to be lost.
Mr. Geo. B. Cubberly, assisted by Mr. Baker,
took charge of the iron work. ke
Meanwhile, the fair fingérs of the ladies
assembled at Mrs.Clark’s house were. not
idle, but plied the needle with such alacrity,
that a beautiful American banner, 30 x 20
feet, anda streamer 60 feet long, were finished by Saturday afternoon. The fair workers then sat down to a model dinner, which
Mrs. Clark had prepared, towards the making up of whose menu sundry gobblers and
chickens had patriotically contributed, Indeed, we fancy they must have felt particularly honored, for we can imagine no death
more glorious for a chicken or turkey to meet.
The dinner over, the graceful assemblage adjourned to the foot of the staff, which had
been planted by the gentlemen above mentioned, and. which stwod ready to reeeive the
banner at its head, 135 feet from the ground,
Mr E.W Bigelow here delivered an address
which occupied about one hour in the deliv:
ery, and is spoken of, by those who heard it,
as a masterly aud eloquent effort, firing the
auditory with ‘patrietie ardor and lofty
thoughts. At its conclusion, a salute of 34
guns was fired, the reverberations of whdse
thunder, as it echued among the surrounding hills, in the still evening air, seemed to
say to the Secessivuists i Nevada: ‘There,
blagt you—tuke that !’’
It was nearly midnight before they were
ready to hvist the flag. Mrs. E. G. Wiite,
Mrs. E. W. Bigelow, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. J.
Clark, and Mrs. J. N. Turner then came forward, aud hoisted the flag to the masthead,
amid the moat deafening cheers. At twelve
v'clock, the assemblage retared, all in the
highest and most enthusiastic state of mind,
to dream of tae Star Spangled Banner and
the glories of jhe American arms.
