WETTING THE STREETS.—BScarcely a moment passes during the hours of sunskine these hot days, that some one may not be seen in one part of the town or another, with hose pipe in hand squirting water on the __planked streets or sidewalks; “Undoubtedly itis a process cooling to the atmosphere, but this may be counterbalanced by the evils it produces. The air is made damply hot and” unhealthy. many of our citizens are constantly bunged up with colds in consequence, to say nothing of the destruction ofthe planks gh of the streets. We do not beheve good results frem this eternal squirting of water.— Will somebody demonstrate to the contrary? . tH*The Pheerville people are becoming uneasy about their break-yoursneck route, since the rash over the Heuness Pass. Said a geatieman, who arrived here on Sunday last from Virginia city :—“T have traveled over the Placerville route at least twenty . mess times to and fro, and hearing so much about the Henness Paas, agninst which I was highly prejudiced, I cuncluded to try it. All have to say now is, I never will goto Wash#0 by the Placerville route again, neither will any of my friends.” Seoit goes. All we ask af travelers is to try our route once and they will certainly be satisfied. People will come ‘to their senses notwithstanding the Placer~ wille News and Sacramento Union blow« dharde. M. E. Parsonace.—We understand that $1,500 has been subscribed by our citizens: to reduce the débt on the Methodist parsonage in this place. The debt is about $2,500. When the amount subscribed is applied on the debt there will remain about #® thousand-dollars unpaid—a sum which may be raised hereafter and the parsonage saved tothe charch. Mr. Hill, the pastor, is financiering affairs judiciously for the ¢chureb. [e"The Chinumen who were arrested a few days ago by officer Knerr have been sentenced to the Hotel de Hazlett for 90 4dayseach by Judge Harrington. Marshal Davidson contemplates taken the crowd for the chain gang to improve the bridges and streets within the corporation. These mis~ erable wretches delight in stealing for the — sake of being boarded at the expense of the county. . hindered. bis drove of cattle and sheep were driven through our streets night before last bound for Washow., Ran, lanib, sheep and mutton ought to be cheap over there, judging from the number that are being sent to the silver region. EF" Our young irieud, Michsel Long, the . : ice cream vender, ‘regaled the «members of the TRANSCRIPT office with a bountiful sapply_of this cooling luxury yesterday. Mis chsel delivers it any where in this vicinity 4 if orders are Jeftat Dreifuse’ bakery. We ean recommend his ice cream as being equal, if not superior, to avy in the State. If you don’t believe it, try it. * ) RaMPANT.— —In cousequence of izarrival of the Sacramento Unions -It is provoking, but it bappens frequently that the Union bag is sent around by Maryeville or lies over a day at Sacramento.
