> . Saye aren rsereingyern sp Sess ASA Pee yan i 1861, “MAKERS-UP OF WAR NEWS. However much of evil may spring from the present civil war, there is one class of men “in the east to whom it must prove a very mine of weulth. We mean the newspaper men.. The big dailies of New York .City must be fairly coining money. Each has its correspondents at Washington, whose busiess is to worm out of the government officials all the facts they can, which facts, plentifully glossed with the varnish of fancy, re showered upon the reading public, and for these showers of bejizzened facts the reading public pays most L:borally. Some of these currespondeutse—vld veterans who understand all the intricacies and myat-ries of their trade -rely upon their own brains for the manufacture their war items, knowing that falsehoods are just as saleable in the news market as truths. The younger and less experienced fry, however, not well. up in the art of news-making, pester, the public funetionaries most horribly in-search of the staple article of their trade. The public functionaries, who dare not make enemies of these tlewspaper locusts and dare not reveal the exact truth, tell them any kind of lies to get rid of them. These lies are thrown proad-east over all the Atlantic cities, aa fast and furious as steam and lightning-can do it — Thas, it is not uncommon to find ihe Tribune. Times, Herald, and World, of New York, of the same date, making the most contradictory statements about the same thing and the same man. Onone occasion these papers disposed of Gen. Beauregard in a most extraordinary mauner. They had him in Charleston, Richmond Harper's Ferry, and Manassas Gap, all on the same day! These newsmongers, just now, must annoy Gen. Scott and his‘ subordinates dreadfally Among the multitude of fulse reports they are instrumental in fabricating. they occasionally give currency toa truth, which, “« for the benefit of the public service, ought not to be known beyond the. circle of the high chiefs of the government. Every movement of the government forces, the number of men in each regiment, and the location ang destination of every division and brigade is duly published to the world much to the gratification of the secessionist leaders, whe have no need of spies while they have acerss to the New York papers: Jeff Davia and his generals permit nothing ef this sort in the southern papers. The Richmond editors and news reporters are num as death in regard to all contemplated operations of the _ southern troops. It Gen. Scott would shoot or imprisun the whole gang of newspaper correspondents in Weshington, he would do himself and the aaeicuredd an immense servivee. The news that Peaches California, by the pony, is, iu the main, a condeneed haso of the original melange inthe New York papera, and is proportionally diversified with truta and falsehood. As the southern papers ure not permitted to revelin the military secrets. of Jeff Davis and expose his designs, but little relinble intelligence can reach ua of the state of affairsin the secessionist army. With no other wutbority than the New York “papers, we are ot a profound loss te know whut ty believe ubout that same secessivnst army. Siwetimes it contuins eke buudred thousad, sudsowetimes less than fitty thoueand. Qne day it ia starving, and the next luxuriating on the fatofthe lind. In the morning it may be utterly demoralized aud suffering irom diseuse, and in the evening fullo! robust health and military arder. It is a thousand pities Gur intelligence from the east has so much of the apvcrypha! in it ; but we are ubhged to-let it .come.im such abi pe as pleases Heaven and the Wasbington neWemuakers. In short, to tuke it, as ~ ‘we take wives. for better or worse.” ‘Lavy FRAxKLIN.— This celebrated and Wythe, the Muniater of Fu ent go mot y by McKinstry, who the Inw to provide for the condemnation of private property for the use of the Federal Government is unconstitutional.— The Snpreme Court hold it.to be constitutional, and the effect of their decision willbe, that the land at Lime Point will be condemned, its value assessed by a jury, and taken for the use of the United States for military , purposes. The opinion is written by Buldwin, Field and Cope. cencarring. . —_—————— RaiLtRoap SuRVEYS.—The engineer corps of the Sacramento, Placer and Nevada “Railrgad company, under the direction of =~ Chief. Engineer, J. P. Robinson, Esq., now in the field and preparing the first divi: sien for the letting of contracts as soon as possible. ./ Improvements have already been made upon the original location that_ will make a large saving in the cost of grading.— [Placer Herald. ; ee ACCIDENT.—A report having reached Port Ludlow, W. T., that Jeff. Davis had been eaptared by the Federal authorities, the citizens immediately set about firing a salute, in which one of the gunners had nis arm blown off by a premature explosion. K. G. C.—The St Louis correspondent of the Alta speaks as follows of the Knights of the Gelden Circle: ‘‘ Look out for spies and traitors now among you. We hear of some of their movements un this side, in connection with their fellows among you. We don’t want to alarm-your people needlessly, but would earnestly advise you, for the evming few months, to be on your geese agent surprises.” = ‘(FP The grasshoppers are so thick in some parte of the country that the Diggers can’t begin to consume them. They gather bushels every day , and consider that they have a *‘muchee good time. They mash the grasshoppers up into a sort of hash, mixing in angle-worms ; and then bake the mess on a hot rock. ‘They say it is-‘welly good chemuck.” Heaves.—The Farmer and Gardener gives the following as a cure for heaves in horses: Take a smart weed,\gnd steep it in boiling water till the strength is all out; give one quart every day, mixed with bran or shorts, for ten days. Give green or cut-up food, wet with water, during the operation, and it will cure. te An Atlantic exchaige inquires why the sérvices of Gen. Shields are not called nto requisition by the General Gevernment. Gen. Shields is a valiant soldicr, certainly, and an able commander. t= A large number of wagons have recently reached Silver City, in Washoe, luaded with machinery for mining purposes. oe GEN. FREMONT.—A letier received at Washington from London says that Col. Fremont had received an intimation that Gov ernment was about to bestow a mujor-generalship upon bim, and that he was preparing to go to the war with all his enerpies.— He would probably take home with him 10,000 rifles,“anda park of 40 rifled guus, lz pounders. # Union demunetrations, like those which were employed by the patriotism of California to express itself, are all the rage in Oregon now. CusTLy. Fanaa —‘Lue late firemen’s parade, in Sun Franciscg, cost the Depurtment about $20,000, suys the Sprit, which paper therefure opposes a parade ot the firemen on the Fourth. Cuina.—By the arnval of the ship Eureka we have dates from Hong Kong to the 4th -of may, The flags ofthe British and French embassadore at Pekin, were hoisted on the 26th of March. Bidwell, late and tiew a member of the Douglas party, ‘made the following remarks before the at achat Convention of Butté : Our meeting on this occasion Vas been under circumstances of more than usual iinportance ; I cordially endorse the Union sentimenta we have jast heard so Lop atid expreased. and yirld to no man in devotion to our common country. In the present crisis there exn be but one issue—ourGorernment must be sustained or it will go down. There can be no middle ground. He who is nut for it is against it. Such was our progress in all the attributes of nations! greatnesg and power, that no statesman, however Wise, no human sagacity, however profound. could have formed the least conception of the high position we were destiued to hold among the powers of the globe. Must all this be lost to us aud to.the world? Shall we aid the madness and folly that now seeks the destruction of the greatest and best government ever devised by human wisdom? No loyal citizen ean give butone response. The laws -tnust be executed and the Government sustained at every hazard—no matter by whom administered. Jt is now twenty years since Lerossed the parched and trackless waste which then separated the Atlantic from the Pacific slope ef the continent. 1 have learned to appreciate the ‘advantages of a .free and efficient Government, and I feel, in this hour . of peril, more determined than ever before in ny devotion to my country. _ AN IMMENSE ProJecr.—A company, termed the Washoe ang Kagle Valley ‘Vater Company, have for some time past Nave been terting the practicability of bringing the water of Washoe Lake to our mining region. After a series of surveys, they have demonstrated the feasibility of the project, and have commenced operations. The ditch will be about fifteen miles in Jength, four feet deep, six feet wide at the bottom and nine feet wide at the top, carrying 5.000 inches of water. The company find that it will be necessary to run a tunnel one and two-fifth miles Bh Noone the divide between Washoe and Eagle Valleys. The outlet of the ditch will be in Gold Canon, about whicre Kellog’s mill is located. —Virginia City Enterprise. ACCIDENTS In ‘lictiAMA.—A few days since, a son of on: Ruglan, at Red Bluff, wag severely injured bya fall of fifty feet. The Independent dds: ~ Az it is seldom that misfortunes come singly, especinlly in a poor man’s family, we msy alse mention another sad affair which happened te a younger brother of the above, a few dayaago: the boy, along with some others, were amusing themselves near Riley’s so:p f etery, and being thirsty, he went to a large keftle of potash lye which was standing outside, and tock a hearty draught, thinking it was water, which soadieg him severely, doing serious, if not fatal injury, inwardly. “RivLe ReeimMens.—fhe Alia says that Col.
