FRIDAY, JUNE 28th, 1861. ‘ EASTERN MATTERS. ~ The Missouri Secessionists having amrsed themselves by cutting the wires of the telegraph line, between St. Louis and Fort Kear“ney, in order to vex the Union men in the “ north-east corner of Kanens, a great deal of in the transmission of pony news to California, has been the consequence. How long the telegraph men will permit the wires to remain idle, or whether. the Secessionists will allow the line to be placed i in working order, are matters about which’ we cari wet. volunwer a conjecture. A sound drubing, if -men to inflict it-could. be found, would do these Missouri Secessionists ujworld, of good, by teaching thei to behavé themselves aud to keep their thievish fingers off the telegraph. In this issue of the TRANSCRIPT, we gives) a little slice of news, said to have been brought by the last pony and received by the Morning Call and Times of San Francisco. It contains nothing to tlirow discredit on its general purport, and, therefore, we accept it as authentic. An important item in this news is that which intimates the not remote settlement of affsirs, between the ‘federal of all-the —states;--That~ the Secessionists have had their eyes widely opened to the preposterousness gf attempting to drag their states out of {6 Univn, by force of arms, is net aeubject for our special wonder, by any means. As long as there was a faint hope of enlisting the sympathy and aid of France. and Great Britain, and as long is the notion was current that one Southron could flag four Northrons, the determined belligerent attitude of the Secessionists was hob surprising. But now, when it. iiee apparent that’ French and British feeling is “against them, and when southern opinion is awaking‘from the delusion in regard to the lack of northern pluck and efficiency, it is General Convention. -If Jéf Davis and his coadjutors have nut entirely lost their wits, they ean not help seeing that the game of war, whieh they have been attempting to play against President Lincoln and General host is one in which they can not succeed. Admitting, for the sake of argument, that one Southron is good for four Northrous— an assumption, however, which has: neither reason por-experience to recommend it—yet, the great advantages of the north over the south, in the superior uumeries! foree of the army, the magnitude of the nivy, the vaster wealth and credit, and the intense earnestness with which so many thousands hove rushed to the defense ofthe, Stars and Stripes, auust satisty the rations! men of the seceded states thet they are doomed to de” fext. The Times aad Cali have ae foliowing dispatch : “F The pony arrived at Fort Churchill with New York dates to the 16th of June. _ An impression gains both North and South that a‘Netional Convention will be called to settle existing difficulties. The people of the South are dissatisfied with the Confederate Government, especially since Kentucky issued a Univn manifesto. In Virginia one half of the counties have called a Union Convention to organize a provincial government, and depose Governor Letcher, The news ismoére generally pacific since the avowu sympathy of France with the Adiministration. “The tenor of the English debates in Parliament is very conciliatory, and the Ministry are backing down from their menacing position.A serious riot prevails in Newfoundland against the English Government. NORTHERN TREASON.—Whef the federal government, “at one fell swoop,” raked ail the eastern telegraph stations and found the damning evidences of tréason staring eo many heretofore accounted loyal men in the face, all the high officials of the government, except Gen. Scott, so it is nid, were completely thunderstruck. The loudest preachers of Union and coercion were found to be the confidential spies and informers of-. tie Charleston and Montgomery Secessionists. Such a discovery very naturally. surprised the President and his Cabinet Ministérs ; and yet, when une comes to think of it, these telegraphic traitors are no worse than the easteru manufacturers who, for the filthy lucre of the Secessionists, supplied them with arms and munitions of war, which they knew in their hearts were to be employed agaiist themselves and their fellow Northrona. In the days of the Revolution such traitors were summarily dealt with. A tree and a cord settled their earthly affairs, without the intervention of acourt ana jury, pretty much as the Secessioulsts on the, Mississippi. river are nuw serving the Union men, but 4 hasty retribution is net in consonance the spirit and enlightenment of the age.— Nevertheless, clemency to traitera is cruelty to loyalists, PLAGIARISM ‘lhe other day, Brother Ridge, ef the S74! Our party after leaving North San Juan did some tall travelling over a pretty rough section of country ‘until we arrived at Bear Valley via. Washington, Alpha and Omega, [at all of waich places the miners »nd merchants appear to be doing a good business. Not having found employment thus far and ~heariug very encouraging reports of the ifines.in and’ about this place—Chalk Bluff—we turned our st ps thither, where we buve been sojouruing tor the past several days. On the way we inet with quite an uccident, it was the loss of the neat little hand axe, which you presented us With at the time of our departure. Joe bad it wrapped up ip his blaukets but it would drop vut. From all that we have been able to learn in the way of prospecting, personal observationand ingu iry, this is beyoud a doubt one vf the best mining loculities we have yet Visited. Every body appears to be doing weil, and Thave yet to hear of the first instance of aset of niining Claims—und there ure sume fiifeen ur twenty in suce essful operation which we have already visited— which do not yield fair wages over. and ubove all expenses. Water for mining purposes is supplied by the South Yuba Canal Company, and it is the supposition that there will be plenty the remainder of the season. As you may be in ignorance of the fact, allow. me to state that the town or mining eamp of Chalk Bluff is pleasantly located on the Eastern ridgeif Nevada Couitity about . ten milesfrom your big City, and commands a view of seme of the finest scenery the eye ever rested upon. It is truly grand and picturesque. Onthe one side you see the snow capped Sierra, while on the other, the vailey of the Sacramento and the coast Tange ofmountains. The Union sentiment is the seutiunent in-these parts, as was fully illustrated at a ball yiven last night at the Chalk Bluff Dancing Academy, Dr. Knight pro-. prietor. The ball was literally crowded by the elite and fashion of the place, and I was informed that sume of the parties present came froma distance of twenty’ miles, Joe and the Mijor, e ling r. ther tired after their day’s labor, ret.rd to their virtuous mackiu.awe before miduight, but your correspondeut took a back seat, and enjoyed -the * guy und festive seene” until broad day-light.
