THURSDAY MORNING, JUNE 4th
i __)
IMPROVE MENT.—In these dull daya, when
crowds are rushing off iu.crazy baste to silverlaud, it is a treat to chroulcle an improve“ment of any kind going on in vur midst.—
There is one at least, and we cannot miss
the opportunity of naming it.” The Nevaia
Fouring Mill, which is one of the institu
tions uf the place, has been undergoing repairs some weeks, and it is coming forth
from the hands of the workmen eularged
and improved in every re-pect. Several
new reofs are seen rising in the ait io that
vicinity, showing great enlargeménts. The .
engines have been taken up and the most
substantial stone and cement’ foundations
laid under them. The capacity of the mill
has beea increased one run of stone. It is
. Bot expected that any better flour will be
made by the imatitution than before, for that
would be-impossible, But more will be turned out and all of the beat quality.
The owners of the mill, M ssrs. Clark.
Bigelow and Davis.are enterprising men and
deserve the succes they are enjuying, and
nobody can do better as an agent than Ole
Torsou. We understand the will is abuut
teady to commence operations aguin alter
its overhauling.
FRENCH SUBscKiPTION®.—Mons. FigUerre hus called on us with reference to a
clipped article in our columns yesterday, stats
ing the sums given by varivus places ia this
county. ‘The statements were not correct.
In addition to the $9 from Grass Valley,
there was a lormer list in which the citixens
vf Grass. Valley subscribed $172. French
Corral has elev subseribed $105. These
subscriptions wete-raised for the benefit of
the starving operatives in FranceMons. Figuerre raised the money collected
in this place. Heintoruns us that he has been
promised more from our citizens, The
above corrections make a better showing for
our county iu the laudable erdeavur to rea
leive the necessities of French Operatives
thrown out of employ by this cursed slaves
holder’s rebellion.

CHANGES.—Theodure
Lampe and Frank
Fisher are about opening a five barber shop
and bathing ro ms, at Fisher's old stand opposite the Nitioust Exchange Hotel,
The shop new wccupied by Lampe is to be
turned into a Dry Goods store, having been
leased by H. Horwitz & Co.
Jacob Rosenthal is to take the store now .
occupied by Horwitz & Co.
te 8. Hass & Co. have a‘splendid” stock
of Clothing and Gents’ Furnishing goods on
band whieh they offer sale at exceedingly low
tates. Gu and examine their goods.
Booxsinoet:y.—Mr. Earvet has removed his bookbinding establishment to the foot
of Broad street, next dour te Ed. Withington’s. As Mr. Earnest does his work well, we
have no fears but the people will find him in
his new lvcation.
EF Weare indebted tu: Geo. Loring for a
copy of the Sacramento Union.
Vineinta & Truckee Rainoap:-—Shermun, of the firm-of Sherman & Duncan, New .
_ York, “ind the een of Erastus Corning,
‘all railroad men, have been looking at the
route fur the Virginia City and Truckee
Railroad, and return to report, much pleased
with the prospects.
THe Mason abuuT.—Major F. Alten
Wheelock, palmed himself uff ona hotel
keeper at Grnes Valey, says the National,
asan agent of the Sac. Bee and got three dollars out of him.
a
Dissre & Company have had their first
powwow ata ball court in Grass Valley.
They are fearfully patrivtic—the whole batch
of them.
No Frencn Retreat.—The French
were not repulaed at Pucbia as reported. —
The story was a canard. It probably origi.
nated in the fact that the French slackened
fire. Gev. Forey is marching towards the
capital. 4
