Tue SLATE MADE UP.—~As the dey for “more and more plain that a few scheming individeale-of thé basersdrt bave made ups ticket to be proposrd fot indorsement in the Convention on the 17th. It is made Up on » ideration of so many votes he promises to ~ pring for the support of that man, and so on, il the whole ts considered 2 dead thing. _ Of, and when the delegates assemble from all parte of the State, the nomination of 2 tick-. et becomes « mere matter of form—nothing “put a ratification of the bargain of a few puliticians, unless the parties interested in the contract fail in ability to bring their promis~ od support to the combination scheme. If the “high contracting parties” have really the power over deiegates they promise, it is of a0 use for those not having » finger in the . Contract to go to the State Concention at all. They are but cate-paws to haul out other poople’s chestuuts. ‘They vote, it is true, lor mon of their choice, and as far as outward appearances areconcerned, they are fairly beaten bythe voice of the majerity. But it they are merely brought into a formal Con vention and put under pledges to support) the nominees of a few wite-pullers There isa show of fairness, because to the uninitiated it looks as if every mn in convention voted his preferences, whereas the traded-off _ delegates vote for a hulf dozen candidates ; it ly because they are told the particular candidate of their county cannot auoceed it they do not do the detestable deed. The honest men who Cannot be traded off, and who should have a voice in convention really bave none at all because the hole thing has been“‘cut and dried,” as the Now, in such times as these, such practi¢os should cease. The people want a voice in saying who shall be their Governor for the four years of the next term. Conness is not cdatent with a position far above his talents end merits. He must degrode bis high pori. ‘tow by mingling in factional squabble, and hots at it, cooperating with-the-same uid corruption clique that stained the Union party‘last winter with its foulness. The game ia to vacate the Custom House and get a tool fo tin the place of Low—a tool who will use the powerful influence of that toncern tw'help s faction of which Conness shall be head, and whose businéses will be to crush ty man who dies not recognize him as the'great Mogul of the Union party. The _ plan is to reinstate the old xystem that pres _ vélled in this State, which we have fought for years, with this difference, that Cunness is substituted for Gwin: : , “Mr. Conness telegraphs to his satelites here that so and 60 is the fnet, with the object of influencing the primaries here. —If-ene county has done thie thing does it follow our county wust do exactly the same thing? If that were the critérion, ther all that p: liticians have to de, is to select one county most tas eile for their purposes in advance, fix its péhoy and then telegraph it to the rest, that they may fullow suit. This one county would dictate the course ofa party, and that county would be merely the-tool of a few " accomplish their purposes. “Ada Mr: Conness, if he has no self-respect, should at least be windful.of the character of hia position, and bf the condition of the country. The Union party cannot affurd to be split into factions, but there is 4 well meaning portion of the loyal people of this State that will not acknowledge him as owner and dictater of their thoughte alid conscience. . Let him bear himself as becomes a man ocs --@tupying the high position of United States Senator. A few politicians, govertied by spite. malice, and perhaps pelf, made him U. 8, Senator. The people now have the right and demand it, tu select their State of ficers uninfluenced by accidental upstarts. ‘Phore is the ‘frozen truth” told plainly. leg any s GuLD In WaALES.—The Scientific Press hae received a letter from a former resident in San Francisco, who is now operating in gold mining in the north of Wales. He has erected improved machinery ia that country, Primary election dey; that Hervy Brown bas recentiy arranged to have a more active hand in State Maire than wae at first proposed, that a minute canvass of the voters. at the rimaries has convinced them that Low must twin in tan Prancisco, that the Central Committee has cuveluded to order an election of delegates to a county instesd of direct ty tre Bt te convention—esch of these theories has been » in turnas possible the exuse of low spirits ot the Stanford men to~ . day, and each sn turn being dejected. The sentiment of the street settles dowa at the latest dates a still different theory, to wit: that while Stanford is not furious to withdraw, Sargent is more and more disposed to run fur Goversor. Perhaps tie very may be true is found in the inet that the San Francisco correspondent of the Sacramento Bee, professes to contradict the ramer on authority. As the majority of the dispatches irom that quartet in -yrsterdays Bee, are obviously uuteue, it would spoil the uniformity of the batch to presume that one of thew is not false. Very likely Mr. Sargent has not announced himself as a caididate for Govern. ot he did not announce himself last winter tor the U, 8. Senate; still he was a candidate, and gave those whe did announce themselves & very s vere sweat before the race ended. apt than jn the city to elect del-yates of such a character cont pledges from them are neitner asked nor taken; ani such men, when they get to Sacramento, will be very likely. ‘on reviewing the field, to fancy there are just ae good meo as either Stautord or Low. Nor when the Stanford mes get over the first grief of their disappointment need they regard Satgent’s running as the most deplor. able of @vents. Sargent was a firm and consistent friend of the Pacific Railtond. His appearance on the field gives Stanford excellent excuse to withdraw and devote hie whole attention to that road whose intersts are tenfold more important than any which the Governor controls. -It would certainly delight the counties that hnve subseri to the Pucific Rsilroad Stock to have its President go gracefully out of a Sargent, as the Senatorial caucus showed. has much popularity in the mining districts, and though the leaders of both tactions would like well enough to use him or better still te shut him out in the cold, it is doubtful if he will can sent tobe placed where either factions want to uae him, or his friends consent to have him ignored. Nor is the prospect of Surgent’s running for Govenor altogether offensive to tbe Low people. Conness may wot think him ae easy a man as Stanford tu beat in this city, but that is offeet by the opening it makes on bis Congressional ticket for another of the Shannon sort. Perhaps inthe new shuffle it_woukl require, Pheips anght be allowed tw prouit his taste by retiring to,his farm, . and ifenly Fay could be erkins’ chan: ers prow sgn A greut deal worse fate might befall\us than the election of Sargent for Governor. He has made a creditable Congreesman, be urged the Pacific Railroad bill when the wost sanguine thought ite ie sage impossible, he helped pass it, and itis no rewatd for etch services to-attach him like a tail w the kite that either tion in San Francisco is trying to coax into Bight.—3S. F. Bulletin. ; we Eastern News —Grant has gone o work and has laid seige to Vicksburg in regular form. It is reported that Johnaun had sent a large force to retake Maines’ Bluff and cut off off Grant from his fivet, and that Grant.had detached a part of his command against the movement and that a battle was imminent. At Port Hudson, Banks was proceeding with a regular ecige and wis confident of success. Te last news from Port Hudson came via New Orleans and dates from the latter place the 22d of May: From Vicksburg we have dated te Sunday last.
