fEOWESDAY MORNING JUNE 10th RN Gus. HvoKyn.s—The late retiring of Gen. *"Hooker behind the Rappahannock was the signal for all the eroakers in Ametican chris tendum to come out-and fill the air with, their dismal sounds. Of course, the McClel\anites were tompant. Theit chief was “thrust in the face of the Administration wogain, and a great commnaad demanded for im. Cr ticiams on ‘Ges. Hooker could be had gratuitously on ev sorts of stories about his movements, — ‘nd proofs of his incompetency, were thick as — plackberries, George Wilkygs brs taken up . his pen to inake the croakers hunt thejr holes, and. he lays about him most vigorously. te scies has pevntier ene for informapo be et te. all Ati ‘ed him. He pointa to the various strategic movements of Hooker, by which he deceived the enet: y, eroséed the Rappahannock, turned the im-~ pregnable fortifications of Fredericksburg un which the art of fortification had been exhausted, and compelled Gen. Lee to come out and meet him on equal ground,as an ev~ idence of the greut military genius ‘of Hook~ er. He did what no other general had done, and his plan of byttle Wilkes puts up as su_ perior. He held a key position and would pave succeeded but for the treachery or cowardice of Howard's division. Sheltered behind breastwurks and oceupying the must g Smpertenk podition ae the field. when the ené emy made their appearance, these troops threw down their arms and ran without fir“ing a shot. Had they stood bravely to their posts the reb-la must have been defeated. As it was Hooker was obliged to modify hit “plan and form bis ariny again on less advantageous ground, Still he had the rebels apparently tu bis own advantage. But Stoneman was not heard frum. -Averill had not kept up the promised communication. Sedgwick, too had mado a blunder in storining the beights of Fredericksburg and then votiring behind the river. But the worst ca~ lamity and ene which no wilitary genius could be responsible for, and one which none but an All Seeing Eye could foresee, was a storm of rain that awe'led the. streams, broke —Joose the povtoons and threatened to cut of the supplies, of -onr brave agny. Hooker ‘prudently recrossed ‘the river. Safely a hundred thousahd men were recrossed with~ out losé, and nut demuralized. It was in-acs case of any untureseen event like that of a rainstorm. It wasa grievous dissppoint—ment te Hooker to forego the pleasure of ppaww tal the rebel army, but he retired as became a great captain to bide his tiine. ~The fault was in great measure in the under éffivera. Had Howard's division behaved as it should, the rebel army must have been overthrown. Had Hooker been informed of the movements of his cavalry in the direction of Richmond he would have had not the glements which no man can‘ control conspired eeainst hin, victory would ~ have perched on our banners. Such is tite * gum of George Wilkes’ defense of the moves ments of Gen. Hooker iu the rear of Freder. icksburg. We believe he is right. We be« ‘lieve in Hooker. He bas been one of the grand heroes of this war, and America is _ proud of her gallant son. He has been in lights to ride, leaden rain. and iron hail have no terrore for him. He is a glorious hero, and History hngers to write his deeds We trust the affrighted foo will yet see the _ gleam of his victorious sword from the Rappshannock to the Gulfof Mexico. Supreme Cour'r.—It is understood that the name of Lorenzo Sawyer will be presented in the State convention for Judge of the Supreme Court. He is Judge of one of the Judicial Districts of San Francisco, is a _ thorough, careful, sound, and rehable man, and a perfect gentleman.
