‘CONSPIRACY.—A case was before Justice
Harvington’s Court on Wedtesday and
Thureday, which has <licited _ considerable
feeling and much comment. It was the
case of T. CeMartin, arrested for robbing
the stur“of Wm. Stone, on Selby. Flat—
Thévpinion is very strong in this city thatMartin is an innocent man and that there has
been a conspiriey entered info. by the pros
secuting witnesses to_destroy his character.

evidence was about thé same as that elicited.
With regard to the pistolin the-first examination. The jury after being outa few moments brought in a verdict of ‘not guilty”
and -Martin-was discharged from custody.

AN AFFRAY 1S Mempnts.—The following
is from’some late Memphis correspondence
ina St. Louisa paper: It became known to
the military-authorities that Lieutenant Colonel Wood, of Forrest's cavalry, was in the
city in citizen’s dress. “He was arrested at
the Senate and placed in Irving Block asa
military prisoner. One night Colonel Wood
disappeared from prison, but afterwards fell
into the hands of a party under Colonel Lee,
which was scouting outside. the city, and
again placed in Irving Block prison. He
acknowledged he had escaped by aid ofa
Fedérfal officer, Lieuterant Lewis, Second
Licutenant, Second United States regular
cavalry. -Hhewis furmshed hier with a pair
ot-falge whisketa-and-a_coat of a Federal officer: By -thesnikef these he passed the
#uard aid got away.’ For these services he
stated he had paid Lewis five hundred dollares
rest in bis quarters. One night he broke his
bonds, and, by virtue of his pesiticn as an
officer, entéred Irving Block. He went to
the\ room where Colonel Woed was lying
asleep ona bed, and gave'n kick, calling upou
him te\rise. As Wood was doing so he drew
i pistolund fired. The unfortunate officer
wis struck in the mouth, the ball passing out
at. the back.of his. head, . Lieutenant Lewis
‘then surrendered himself-into custedy, He

promoted to hix present position from the
ranks on account of his brave conduct.

the fate ofhis. sonsin-aw, Charles Wright,
who, with’ his wife And > several young
. daughters, left Adams county, Iowa, in April,
1862, for California or Oreyon. Mr. Méi rin
son hus never heard from them since their
departure from Iowa, and is\apprehensive
that they have been murdered by the Indians
_on the plains. If there are any parsons who
know anything concerning this farvly, they
will show their benevolence by comraunicating their knowledge to Mr. Morrison.

A notorious desperado known as Wm. i
Tomen, alias “ Fat Jack,” wae shot and kill
ed at Florence City, on the 23d ult. He had
been ordered ,to leave Florence some months
back. which he did, but again returned, when
he was ‘followed to the cabin of a miner
named Neselrode, and there shot by parties
whose lives he had threatened. In firing at
Tomen, Neslrode, was accidentally shot
from the effect of which he died.
Type Serrinc Macuine.—Appleton’s
Encyclopedia, a tremendous work of 16 volumes, was entirely set up in type by a patent
type setting machine.
Gen. PorTER.—The Washington Star
says that in military circles it is believed that
there was but a bare majority of one vote for
Gen. Porter's conviction on eitber charge.

Tue body ofa Mrs_ Barbour, buried fours
teen years ago in cemeteny in Pittsburg, was
. exhumed recently, and found to be .petrified.
The corpse was considerably enlarged and
very heavy, the united strength of four or five
men being required to handle it.

from St. Louis, mentions the recent death
of Joseph Price, and ‘an old and well known
stesmboatman of the West. Capt. Price
