tor, Mr. Greenwell, te Mr. Wheeler, of SacBeer.—The poor quality of beef with
which our market has been supplied
during this winter, and the uneertain and_
precarious supply of beef cattle, have indueed the butchers of Nevada to form an sesociation. by the means of which. they expect,
hereafter, to keep the market regularly sup~
under present circumstances. Heretofore
their sole depeydence has been in the drovers
who brought their cattl+ to this market which
they had to bay, such as it was, and at such
priees as the drovers chose to ask. From
this time out the associated butchers wil!
send one of their number to the valleys below, whe will select the fattest animals to
he found, and make purchases for the whole.
The price of beef in all the meat markets
will be uniform, and we understand that 25.
cente per pound will be charged: This ina
high price, but we wust bear in mind that the
ronda are dreadful and fat cattle scarce, and
this figure will not rule any longer than the
weather makes it impossible for a different
state of affairs to take place. If we can only
have good beef by thie arrangement, the increase in price will be more than com pensated by the saving of teeth and the labor
of mastication.
WASHOE NoT PLAYED ‘OvT —We, in
strikes in Washoe were played out long agovery lenty, and we considered the «tatermiéiits of men ‘selling out for-one and-two
hundred thousand dollars as mere figures of
speech, used by the-fortune hunters much in
the same way that flowers of rhetoric are
used by Fourth of July orators. An old acquaintance of ours whom we saw~ ‘yesterda y
however, gave our incredulity a powerful
out his interest in certain mining ground in
Nevada Territory for the snug sum of $120,000. Mr. Nichols, tired of Columbia Hill,
had gone. to the land of silver: some
months since, and he made good use of his
bears -witness to. He brought with him
trom San Franciseo an elegant establishment
in the shape ofa fine light carriage, to which
were hitched as pretty a span ef trotters as .
we have seen in many aday. One of them,
in particular, a 2:40 mare, is a fine specimen
of horse flesh. Mr. Nichols paid $700 for
her alone. It is better to be born lucky
than rich. Long may he live to enjoy his
wealth.

Although during his perambulations he saw
a couple of Chinamen that were spiling for a

another. No fight. The next thing he saw.
was a couple of merchants—good looking
chaps—baving no customers were anxious to
swap watches with one another. Local says
there was more brass in the watches than in
their faces. No trade.
£¥" No town in the mountains can boast
of better plank walks than we have in Nevada. The plank walk on Aristocracy Hill has
been completed to the Main street bridge
and with the exception of one place—at the
upper end of Main street—ladies can walk
all over the city without coming in ‘contact
with a mud hole. Let’s have the planks laid
down at that bad piace.
St. Parricn’s Day, which comes next
Monday, promises to be as well observed in
Nevada as in any other portion of the State.
By reference to our advertising columns, it
will be seen that two balls will be given in
the evening; one at the Hook & Ladder
Company's House, and the other at Temperance Hail. The parties who fave undertaken thecballs understand their business and
