EE ELOQUENT TRIBUTE TO CALIFORNIA.— J. Ross Brown, whose delightful letters from Germany are now being published in the Sacramento Union, gives some humorously graphic pictures of German manners and customs. Helikes Deutchland and likes the people,’ but his heart cleaves to the luxuriant fields, the wuuny skies, and the healthful airs of the ‘land that lies beneath the western shadow of the Sierra Nevada. Thus he-closes his last letter from Frankfort on the Main: ‘How often, as-I-wander. about. under the + leaden sky, pondering over some old ruin, or gazing afar off in search of some. little bit of nature undisfigured by the hand of mun—the glorious skies of California come stealing over my memory ; how the broad valleys of the Sacramento and San Joaquin, with. their amountain barriers, their wood-skirted streams, their wild Spring flowers, sweep out.into ‘the dim distance before the. mind’s eye ; how fresh, vigorous and hopeful seems life in that land of premise ; and. what-a glorions future is thrown open to all! I think of the pleas-. ant nights I have slept upon my mother earth in the Coast Range under the star-spangled sky : of the free, hearty aud enilgpeety i Oakguns’ of of the many kind. friends I left: ' Jand—once and still my home—of the flashing waters of the bay, and i ns’ the steamers sweeping in with tidings from the great outer world ; of all that is naturally I think of these, and-then the rattle of drums and clang of bayonets arouse.me from the reverie. Alas, there is no freedom here !—~ = The spirit of decay broods over all.. Military despotism reigns in the air, in the fields, in the cities, over the hearts of men—crushing the energies, blasting every aspiration for the future. I wander in the crowded cities, and hear no familiar voice ; see no familiar-face ; sciousness endued, If werenot; would seem to smile the lesa:” Do you wonder that I long to ‘get back to California—that duty alone is the governing motive of my absence. And you, too; #o kindly cherished there, surrounded by loving kindred and friends, wéuld. feelas I do.— Once. a.
