A Justice's Dectsion.—A cause was on trial not long since, before a Justice having jurisdiction not a thousand miles from Nevada. Counsel for defense objected to a ques tion asked of witness bythe presecution.— aa termined to have his ewn way, and so they dmmner and adjourned. On opening the court in the afterneon both counsel appeared, each with a small library to fortify his opinion by authorities from black letter tomes-dows to ithe last decision of the California Supreme Court. The argument continued on the relevancy of the aforesaid. question till dark, when beth lawyers, exhausted, ceased to exe hibit their logic aud law, and asked a decisiun by the court. The court, during six mortat hours, had listened with most imperturbuble gravity. Hehad said nothing, but YWrom his looks it was judged he had “kept up a devil of a thinking.” Whea the application cathe, he deliberately gave ous took at the "long ! ger ‘long; it don’t ‘mount toa bill er! beans!” Roppery:—The neat warket of Findly . ow North road street,<was robbed on last Thureday night of a large quantity of meat. ‘The robbers effected an entrance by tearing, the slate from one of the front gates. _Seme eight or ten cans of lard, a large amount of pork and some mutton, and the best pieces of beef were taken. From the’ partiality . <j which the thieves showed for perk and lard, ‘prompted the act. — “Hetry From Sky Hicu.”—The frail and unfortuaate person, going by the name of Hetty from Sky High in the local columns of the Marysville papers, made her first appearance in our streets yesterday. Coming ‘in the rain from her old abode she was badly bedraggled, and appareutly out of temper with the weather, herself and everybody else. The last seen of the poor unfortunate, Under Sheriff Potter, who has a big heart for distressed females, was making preparations tofurnish the rather irrascible Hetty with comfoits for the nigbt. The poor girl is apparently insane. or »Hurry UP.—There is an intense anxiety on the past of the officers having the deeperate man, Burke, in charge, and the citizens generally, té -have the Supreme Court act with promptness in the case. The county 18 at a heavy expense in guarding the jail.— pression is off. Come, Supremers, hurry up those papers. ASSAULT.—An assault was yesterday made by James Walsh upon his brother.— Tt appears that the brother interfered to shield hie mother from abuse, when.he was knocked down. A warrant was issued for the arrest of James, but when the officer went to arrest him he escaped by a back window. ee ti The students of the High School have presented that institation with a fine terrestrial globe, measuring nearly four feet in cir. cumference. ve teSelvester Farrel; the -erazy man, who has been perambulating about town, cutting up didrs, is to be sent to Stockton, so the Court says. =e Moxey on Hanvp.—The County Auditor advertises in to-day s-paper for Scrip to the amount of six thousand dollars. Those having General Fund Warrants and want cash instead will do well ta take notice. Cer Notwithstanding the inclement westher the rush for Washoe continues unabated. Yesterday the California Stage Co. took two full stage leads, each passenger imagining no doubt, that he has a dead thing in the future fora pile. Jim MeGue also left. yesterday afternoon with his stage crammed full passengers. tCerThe immense quantity of rain that has ‘fallen during the past few days has convert~ed Deer Creek into a river, and as it looms up, dashing its billows against the huge graoite boulders, it seems as though it wanted to do some damage to the bridges. We trust however they will prove equal to the eme wency. . {er We understand that the Cal. Stage Co. intend putting on a line of stages to connect With the Sacramento line, en-route to Washoe. i} most reasonablerates for CASH. G. W. KIDD, C+ C: BRAVITT, 4-H, HANSON} A. H.
