CHURCH.—As will be seen by reference to
our advertising columns, ‘the first ot these
lectures: will take place on the evening of
the 10th of April. The name of the Rey. T.
Starr King; who will deliver it, is familiar to
every man and. woman who reads newspapers, as one of the most eloquent lecturers
in.the United States, and, therefore,-needs
no comments at our hands. General Shields, .
the next on the list, enjoys such a wide popu.
larity, not only as a lecturer, but as a. brave
soldier, that our task, whilst speaking of him,
namie. ‘The other lecturers, though not occupying so prominent. a position as the two
last nanted gentlemen, possess ability of no
will come here at the suggestion and through
the influence of Dr. Deal, is a sufficient guarantee of their ability to do justice to any’,
_ subject they may undertake to treat.
The object of these lectures, besides the
entertainment and instruction whith they
will afford, is to raise means sufficient, if possible, to liquidate the debt incurred in the
building of the Methodist Parsonage. We
<ongratulate Dr. Deal on his happy idea. This
mode of raising money is far .better than the
ones resorted to heretofore, which have been
indiscriminate begging—handsome ladies being selected as the most efficient beggars—
or fairs, gotten up and conducted in such a
manner.as te arouse the vehement indignation of the ultra orthodox membere of the
Church. These lectures, having nothing in
them of a sectarian charactér, are acceptable
alike to Jew or Gentile—every man or woman attending them being certain to get his
or her dollar’s worth in entertainment and
instruction. We have no doubt that” the .
Church will be filled at every one of these
lectures ; if it is not, it will only prove that.

EASTER SUNDAY.—To-morrow will be
Easter Sunday. To most readers in this
cold, matter-of-fact, Protestant country, this
signifies but little ; but in Catholic countries,
where the commemoration of the miracles
which attended the birth ‘and’ the death of
Christ are observed with great pomp and
solemnity, Easter Sunday is a great, day, and
the people, both old and young, look forward
to its advent with pleasurable anticipations.
Enster Sunday not only ends the season of
Lent, but, as everybody knows, (or ought to
know) is the anniversary of the Resurrection of Christ. The-week now ending is
staining from business, and spending most of
prayer, or in the observance of
memorating the trial and
erucifixion of Christ, by the Jews. This event
took place on a Friday, that day, called
“*Good Friday,” is -obse: ith a religious
fervor, not ‘as boisterous, perhaps, as. that
we have seen exhibited at some “rev ¥
but equaling it in intensity, and bordering on~
fanaticism. The most lukewarm Catholics—.
Aye, ven men who scout the idea of religious miracles, observe it as a day of fast.
Christ remained in the sepulchre until the
latter part of the night of the Sabbath, (Satlen went to the sepulchre, ‘and on their arriving there, a
place, an Angel of the Lord descended ‘from
Heaven, moved the stone which covered the
sepulchre, and sat down upon it. ‘His face
shone like a flash of lightning, and his robe.
To-morrow, therefore, is intended to celest miracles of the Catholi¢ Ch
, rch, and, for
aught we ido, of the Protestant ‘Chureh,
too. It will be

forty days, have led. life: of abstinenee,.

the orders and took a position behind a screen
to see what disposition was to be made of 80°
much “grub” when very soon after he was
called again,-andorders Were piven for two
dozen eggseach. The eggs were soon forth~€oming and were eiten with a will. The
men then ordered a bottle of brandy, and
after tapping it two or three times, called for
their bill, which they paid, and then took
their departure.
THE Lucky One.—Mr. Liebert informs
us that the ticket which drew the $300 inhis enterprise was held by. a Mr. Addy, of
San Francisco. Mr. Addy was in this place
ome three months ago, and purchased some
twenty odd tickets in the raffle, and out of
that number drew three prizes. The prizes
were sent to San Francisco, yesterday, by
Wells, Fargo & Co.
ROBBERIES.—We have no items of this
kind to speak of to-day. The stormy season
we are now having, keeps the boys who are
on that “lay” within doors. , Should the
storm ever cease we promise our readers that
this branch of the local news will be well at-.
THE REWARD oF RioT.—Sixteen of the
persons who were proved to have been engaged in the recent riot upon Chinamen in
Coloma, have been fined hy the Court of Sessions two hundred dollars each, and required
to pay the costs of prosecution.
THE Sacramento correspondent of the San
Francisco Journal suggests that Kahl should
apply to the Legislature for a new trial.
The Court refused his request in this respect
and we can see no good reason why he should
not be hearkened to as well as others.
A Chicago broker, a member of the church
during the present crisis, hag been in the
habit of pocketing ten per cent on the specie
which he collected in church on Sunday, by:
the very simple process of rendering back an
equal amount in Western funds.

principle of complete secession from dictionary rules. Here is one read in court last
