Burke SENTENCED.—The remittitur in Burke's case having been received from the Supreme Court, the prisoner was brought before the District Court yesterday morning at 10 o'clock fer re-sentence. Burke desi-~ red to have‘his irens remuved., The request. was not granted. , Doubtless Burke intend--} ed to make a desperate effort to escape and _ for that purpose“wanted bis shackles off.— The sentence of the Court was that the pri~ soner be executed, on Friday next the 3d proximo, between the hours of 9 and 4,— Burke seemed affected on hearing his sentence. When returning to. the jail, he asked why the Court had net sentenced him te die on Friday next, He was told tha€ was the sentence. He said he pnderstood the Judge tosay Kriday week, but he was glad tu hear it waa cotuing off $0 seen. The quicker the better; he said. When asked if he had any_thing to say why sentence should not be pronounced upon him, his appearance indieated that he @esigned to give his lawyer a pretty severe scoring, but he succeeded in making the following remarks and then, somewhat confused; sat-dotwn : “My lawyer took my. case for me tothe Supreme Court. He has failed to doit. I make this appeal, not for mercy. I do not expect te receive it. Ido it to expose him. settle with my brother; then I am ready if youare.” «4 , Probably his counsel, Mr. Waters, has done all for him that was possible for an attorney to do. He succeeded in prolonging the prisoner's life by taking his case to the Sux preme Court, giving him the time in which he effected his escape. Burke had the beat of reasons to be thankful to bis counsel. It is owipg to his own imprudence that he was retaken. Labiges’ Suprer.—To-morrow night the ladjes of the Methodist Church give a supper in the Church building. Some persons may imbibe the idea that it is an April fool affair, but the ladies of the Church are dex termined that there is no unusual trick about it. QUARTZ JOLLIFICATION.—Sneath « & Clay started their magnificent new mill on Gold Flat yesterday afternoon, at which time the event was celebrated by a grand Jollificatior. Champagne. dtd lager flowed freely, and the best kinds of eatables were . washed down on the occasion. Requies-CaT.—The favorite cat of Fortune Gues, a vegetable dealer on, Commers cial street. departed this life on Sunday night, to the great surrow of the ownet. The dealer closed his shop yesterday and posted a notice on the door in the words following, “The funeral of my cat will take place tosday at 2. o'clock.” pace. Reqguies-cat in bees Stamp Dotits'-—A.
