ATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 7th. Districr CourT.—This Court has been pecupied ever-since Tuesday morning last, ith the divorce enge of Ratisom vs. Marmauke Ransom. This case has exerted a vast amount ef interest, owing to its peculiar na» ture.the large number of witnesses examined, and the exertions made and talent displayed by the counsel on both sides. We had inptended to have published the testimony in full. but the details elicited from the various a itnesses were such that we deem them unfit . for publication, and we will, therefore, merely Sive-x synopsis of the case. Mrs. Ransom, p the, pluingff, is a fine. looking elderly lady,50 years of age. Her answers were all made jin a ateaightforward and intelligent mannet Mr Ransom, the defeudant, is 61 years of page and hag the appearance of a florid and hale old inin, aud showed equal readiness With his spouse in answering the questions prepounded to iim. Phe plaintiff avers*in her complaint that F she was married to defendant. in the city of Se Louis, Mo, in the year 1846. ‘Phat in Is4¥ he caine to California and engaged. in * 1852 She joined him at the city above named; that shortly after her arrival therehe got repeatedly drunk and was very cruel towards her; that in consequence of suid drunkenness and-eruelty-she-wae-competied to Téave him ‘to Moore's Flut_and-engaged in--bua ness at that plac: ;. that he then began to-write letters to her expressing the greatest penitence and. contrition jor the wrongs he had doneher, iunploring her to return to him and promising all tosuner of good andkind—behavior in the future, &e., &e: that he went before a Justice of the Peace at Moore’s’ Flat and took a solemn oath never to drink agnin; that he sent. her the Justice's affidavit to that effeet (the letters and affidavit were produced In-Court); that in consequence ut swid promises ele was induced to ov to Moure’s Flat and live with him; taat shortly after she had been there the defendant reeommenced bis old practice of drinking and cruelty towards her; that he also committed adultery, &e.— and that she was aguin compelled to leave him and return to her friends in Sacramento. She therefore asks to be diverced from defendant and to be allowed one half of the property, the which half is estimated at $10,000 The defendant denies every one of the allegations set forth in the complaint and’ he iatreduced testimony to prove that he did not get drunk more than once or twice a year.— On the plaintiff being put on the stand she admitted that during the G00 days they had lived together he had not been what the em~ inent counsel for the defense called “ mortally collapsed,” (dead drunk) more than four days, which, the said counsel remarked, was doing as well ae the best of as could reasonably be expected to do. No trial has taken place in this Court for many years wherein *o much talent has been displayed by the lawyers and eo many “ points” made. Some of them were more spicy than chaste, and f6 was a portion of the testimony. One of the reasons given why a divorcee ought to tdischarge his second load, Grey drew a reone Grey and one Hanchett got shooting at each other. It was au old rrel, originating about a dng fight. anchett fired at Grey with a double. barrel shot gun, but missed his aim. He then cocked to fire again, but found in his haste that hé had cocked the trigger of the empty barrel. Befroe be could volver and shot him in the arm, cutting an artery but net mortally wounding Hanehett. —SacBee : TELL Us.~-We wish some Solomon would settle the question, What—is—a—gentleman? Does a gentleman sinoke in the street!— Does a gentleman spitin a lady’s presence? Does a geutleman keep his hat upon his head in her presence, either in a store or parlor! Does he put his feet-upon her sofas ot chairs? Does he say rude things under cover of “a joke?” Does.-he ever converse: before her on subjects known to be painful. to ladies, and-which ean be well avoided?) Does he annoy respectable ladies. by rudely staring at them in the streets? Does he stand gaping on the church steps to see them pags in and out? We fear, if these questions agd muny others that might be asked sare to be answered in the negutive, the ranks of “gentlemen” in New York would be marvellously thinned out.—Fanny Fern. mei fe Two poor fellows were picked up in Washington the other day sick, and an order was procuied for their admittance to. the Seminary Hespitel. and an ambulance to convey them. RIVER MINING IN FRANCE.—The dredging machines emrloyed in lowering the beds of the Saone at Lyons, have brought up nearly one thousand coins and medals, the earliest being bronze, and bearing the head of Julius Cacsar and some of the first emperors, “SiR, lLamaphrenologist Would you liketo have me examine the heads of your children? 1 will do it cheap.*? ““Wall,’? said the farmer, *:] rathér guess they don’t needit. The counsel for the defense . demolished this part of the argument by addressing himself to one of the jury who is married but has nu children, and asking him . whetherhe thought that hie wife ought typ apply for a divorce on that account? The testimony occupied from Tuesday morning till Thursday afternoon; when H. M. Moore, Esq., vpened for the plaintiff. He was followed by Niles Searls, Eeq., for the defense. On Friday morning George 8. Hupp, Esq., opened for the defendant. and spoke five hours, after whch John Garber. Esq., closed the cave for the plaintiff. He spoke taree hours. after which the case was subwitted te the jury, who, after balf an hour's deliberation brought in a veidict m favor of plaintiff. A motion for a stay of proceedings w.ll probably be argued this morning. { Ix Town.—We had the pleasure of a cail the other day from that splendid fellow of the press, W.S. Byrne, Esq., local editor of the Marysville Express. Byrne looks rubicand as usual and his countenance seems to say he has good thing if he only chose to mentien it. He is good looking enough to pass for a Nevada county man in any society. We notice Judge Filkins of Yuba and Jas. Haworth, Président of the California Stage company, have been sojourning among us a few days. MARCRK, 6h, 1862.
