The Marning Bans NEVADA CITY. —— TUESDAY ‘MORNING, MAX 13th, a ' = Pusisament ror Breacn oF Contract. — When the Constitution of the United States was formed the people of the various sections of our country, entered into a sulemn com~< pat to patho pererer. _ The _agreemen t seule inviolate down. to the. last year “of the Democratic Administration of James Buchanan, when, without cause, itwas ruthlessly broken by an armed rebellion exe tending over nearly altthe Stave States. — Phe great viject of this attempt. to. overthrow the contract entered into in 1789 was the “perpetuotion and more firm, estublishment of dlavery. From an iustitdtion looked upon with shatie and suspicion by the founders of the Government; and one to be restricted and rooted out rather than countehanced, it had. becotie by. the genius of Eli Whitney and d_ consequent growth of cotton as the basis on . which Southern prosperit} rested. ‘The ald feeling of aversion. to slavery remained at the North, and the march of civilization seemed to encroach upon the slave power so far as moral force could be applied to it. To . getrid of the antagonism between freedom . and slavery existing in the Union the fireeaters in the South violated the faith pledged in the compact of 178) and undertook to ree volutionize or destroy the Government. The attempt has forced upon the Government the alteruative of aveing the Union and with it Republican institutions go down, or taking up arms vigorously to defend all that The war on the side of Union men, is a katy war. It is iano sense one of conquest, but suvolves only the defense and maintenance of our rights and the puoishment of rebels for _viylated faith. They were under obligations to. atand by the Conatitution and to make a com. mon cause of maintaining the Unien intact. In taking up arms against them we but resort to the only arbitrament left us by the laws) of nations to compel the. faithless to pay the penalty” of their treachery. “Principle de. mands that when partics stipulate to perform ~“eermin duties tti—consideration of certain benefits, they should live according to theterns ofthe contract, The urmies of the Union are thusfighting for the princip'e of good faith and against treachery. News FRoM THE ‘East. — Jolly good news for the people will be found in our columius to-day, ‘The Merrimac, which was the only hope of the rebels on water for a} time, has saved our cause a few hundred pounde of iron nang powder which the Monitor designed to tib-roast her with, has been blown up by the rebels, ‘The vessel was aure te be sunk or fall into our hands if sha ever had another engagement. with the Monitor. Norfolk and Portsmouth have fallen into our hands and the people of the “Sacred Sile” have no longer access tothe Atlantic Ocean ov the oyster beds near thereunto Cut off from the grain. growing region, the rebels , flying before McClellan are getting in a tight ‘place from which there appears no easy ex"¥trication. Congress has wade a decided move in the right direction in the bill organizing the Territury of Arizona. Slavery is prohibited in that. Territory as well as all others in the bill. ~————No more stave States, but lesa, is the order of the day since the rebels have forced the country to the isaue, The news in this morning's paper we consider among the most important if many aspects that has come over the wires singe the war counpenced. The fears of dainage to our seaboard cities from the Merrimac: are now at an end. ‘The private Nashville is at Wilmington, and the naval career ef the Bogus Confederacy has terminated only with disgrace. Piracy is stamped upen it forever. EX&cCUTION OF Bonney.—K. W. Bonney was hung in San Leandro, ov Friday last, for . the murder of Hirsch. At 2 o'clock. a. M. on Friday, the $F. Journal says, Bonney attempted to take his own life by opening a vein in hia leftarm. He bled profusely, and was very weak, so weak* indeed, that he had to be carried to the scaffold and supported to the trap. He was hung at a little after 12 o'clock, and his bedy remained suspended 25 minutes. Though he fell 8 feet his neck was not dislocated ; he died of atrangulation. He ee his innocence of the murier to the jast, though, it is said, he admitted to some that he assisted in dragging Hirech and knew whe did kill him, After his death his body was brought to San Erancisgo for interment, ‘BY TELEGRAPH Pittsburg Landing.—50 acres Buildings destroy New York—Loss’ 000,000. MonTEREY, Tenn., 10th—Deserters from the Louisiana regiment, in the fight on Friday, just arrived, state that the rebel force making the attack on the left wing on Friday night was 35,000 strong, with 30 pieces ot cannon, under Bragg, Van Dorn, Hardee and Prico—their object being to overwheln and drive our left wing inte the river. In the second, third and fourth wards, wost ef the buildings consumed were private: residences, being among the best in the city. The loss approximates to three millions. Ingurance $1,400,000. The busineas part of the city suffered comparatively little” Several lives were lost, umong them Dr. Carny and Ransom Haight, merchant.-~ Some ten persons are missing. The wind, Blowing agale, carried the burning brands to various parts uf the city, setting fire to a number of places. [8 Some Democratic Congreasman have issued a manifest iu favor of a reconstructive of the Democratic party, saying they believe the party necessary to the well being of the conntry. Well, suppese when the war is aver the Democratic party is reeonstructed, Of course the rebels will go back into the party again, ifiudeed, they ars not in it wow, fighting for the old Democratic doc, trine of State Rights. Of course Andy Johnson, Parson Brownlow and such men will not associate politically with those who recently conspired against their lives and property. The southera patriots will never be found in such company again. Now, what sort of a Democratic party will it be composed of old Democrats lately in rebelliov against the Government and a few northern allies, such as Vallindigham, Latham, Stark and mea of that ilk? Who wouldn't be proud to belong to such a political crowd t SHIPMENT oF WooL.—34,160 lbs of wool Bonney, wae a of Portland, Maine, and a, have been shipped this season, by two houses iy Belgue:. Don'r READ US KiGHT.—The Sac. Bee says the TRANSCRIPT is the only Republi‘ean paper in the State that dislikes the call of the Republivan State Central Committee. It is not the first time the Bee has misrepresented us. We iudorsed the letter of Gov. Stanford and showed the call of the Committee was in accordance with it. Gov. Stanford advised making use of the Republican organization ag the best basis for a Un« iov party, and recommended » broad and liberal call The Republican organization through its Committee has made just such a call, and the Bee can find no sentence of ours condemnatory of it.
