Jam. 1, 1804.82,800,000a second speech ef our Representative in
the Pacific Railroad Bill. It was
~ saalivered te Committee of ie sagle House.
Saniiag eis ‘The speech ‘te well’put up to.
carty conviction, tnd is a credit to the gen.
tleman who made it. Our space forbids the
publication of the remarks of Mr, iat
or even generous quotation from them
The aim of the speech is te dhow that in
' the event of a foreign war the United States
must lose her Pacific possessions, because
tie Inthmes routd would be easily closed,
_ the port of Sau Branelsco blockaded and the
ngricultueal regions of our State seized, thus
starving us into o surrender in a very short
poriod of time. It shows that supplies sufficient for our demands in case ot war with

us; that, therefore, the lous of the Pacific
Btates and Tertitorics must be inevitable
with the ptesont means of transportation.
Mr. Sargent exhibits the mang disadvantages
to result from the tues of any portion of our
territory, particularly the of gold, and
impresses the idea upon Congress that the
defense of our c territory ie demanded

GREuN Roses,—Speaking of this vegeta
ble freak, the Columbia Courier says: There
is nothing now more extraordinary in Abos
rose than in a.ted one. They are quite common all over the State. Sontag’s Nursery at
San Francisco, intreduced them to the gardens of the Pacific slepe, and from this nur‘sery they have gone to almost every town in
Californinand Oregon. Niles Mills first bro’t
tt to this town, about five years ago, and the
same bush now stands where he planted it»
within a few rods of our office, and its de«
scendents—bushels grown from the cuttings
‘of it-~flourish in ali the gardens around these
diggings.
Singular colors in roses and other flowers
. are Usually produced by the florist, by artificia! crossings ; but the-green rose is supposed to have been the result of an accidental intermingling of the roots of the rose and
common sumach trees. It was first discovered in North Curolina, and is quite common

In regard to the geare-crow of the iene
