Avery, Esq., State Printer, for a a I 900,000 was carried by 1,168 majority, , é FRIDAY MORNING, MAY 28nd. . STATUTES oF 1863.—We are indebted to copy of the session laws of last winter, The volume is a neat one in every sense, of 831 pages. It contains, besides the usual coutents of the yearly volume of statutes a list of the State officers, names of members of the Legislature that enacted the laws in theibook, Commissioners of deeds fur the State in other States and Territories, and the constitution ef California, with amendments, Typoegraphically the volume is a credit te the State. The early day-at which the Statutes are ready for distribution this, year entitles our worthy State Printer te a great deal of credit, which every lawyer, ag well as others who have occasion to-use the Statutes, will be ready to award. }We no» tice that our session laws grow, more weluminous year by year, owing partly to the pro« vision in our constitution-that an amended TAXES.—At the late session of the Board’ of Supervisors, there wag added to the taxes for State purposes, as required by law, five cents on-each one hundred dollars of personal and real property, tor the construction of . additional buildings at the Asylum for-the}— Insane, and two ceats on the hundred to “raise the wages of soldiers enlisted in this State five dollars a month. These additions make the taxes for State purposes ninetytwo cents on the hundred dollars of proper-~ ty valuation. The tax is pretty heavy but if the money be well applied to the laudable purposes designed, the people will not be apt to complain. Ktwen’s SPEECH.—Sumebedy has sent us Kewen’s speech, delivered in the Assembly chamber on the 27th of April. It is vapid, wordy and full of lies. Itis of that. kind called hifalutin. The speech comes with nobody’s imprint on it, probably because the printer ia not altogether insensible to shame, and dislikes to see his name cennect« ed with such a document. Fixntxe.—We went trout fishing yesterday with a party of first rate fellows away up Deer Creek, just below the mouth of the Cascade Ditch. That's the spot where the ‘fish are said to bite best; but if a fellow don’t go there fishing he won’t get bit. Ce The “sturms-on the Platte,” frequent at this season of the year, are held responsible for the breaks in the telegraph and non< reception of news°from the seat of war. We have had no news fot some days on account of the aforesaid storms. tA. P. Chureh has become sole proprictor of the book store, corner of Pine and Broad streets, having ‘purchased the iaterests of T. H. & LJ. Rolfe. Mr. Church will continue to keep on hand a large and ‘elegant assortment of books, stationery, magazines, pictorials, Eastern and California pas pers, and a genéral. assortment of fancy #00ds. Church is a first rate fellow and. should be well patronized. ne eee Ee" The bridge, at the foot of Main street, deading to Aristocracy Hill, was precipitated into Deer Creek yesterday morning. A drove of cattle was passing over it at the time but succeeded im reaching the hill side without receiving any damage. The bridge has been in a bad fix for some time and ‘now we presume the city “‘dads” will order anew bridge to be constructed in the place of the old 6ne. ‘Ex Our readers should not forget that the Leighton Troupe will perform st the Theatre toxnight. Go by all means, everybody. "Mrs. tt will please accept our thanks for some splendid cherries, the first we have seen this season. Mra. C. has one one of the best gardens in the city. Norice To Roap OveRrsEens.—Under the amended road law, Overseers obtain their receipts from the Township Trustees. [ The Washoe stages took off 52 pas-. eengers yesterday. tJ. F.
