every ten of the people of Baltimore are more’
devoted to the Union now than ever, but: the
fomentors‘and those who aided and abetted
the foul deeds of the 19th of April, have not
changed one iota. The same elements that
assailed the passage of the Massachusetts
troops are alive still, and would certainly
break out again on the first renewal of the
causes of the former outbreak. It is evident
that “the mob are all armed = still. They
have not surrendered a single weapon.—
There is a house on Green Mount avenue,
pretty. well out, in whichare seereted several large pieces of ordnance. A large quantity of powder has been stored-in the vaults
of Green Mount Cometery ! so that not even
the sacred precincts of the dead are free
from -the intrusion of the conspirators.—
House after house in the Five Points quarters of the city is stored with murderous
weapons, and what is more, these depots of
arms. and munitions are kuown to. the Chief
of Police and his men. While the mob, or
Col. Trimble’s ununiformed men, as they are
dignified with the title, are thus miantained {by the city authorities, in an atitude of
terror and hostility to honest citizens, they
are spending borrowed treasure by the thousands, to increase the. military force to be
used against the United States.
THE FoLsum PENAYENTIARY, -—— The
sprightly Sacramento correspondent of the
Marysville Appeal; speaking of. the bill for?
establishing.a branch state prison at Folsom,
says it was introduced in the “Assembly,.an
hour before adjournment, and passed in dou‘ble quick time.. It was, however, defeated
inthe Senate. Had this measure been introduced in the Legislature at an early day in
the session, and its merits and the necessity
for a branch ptison filly’ discussed and anderstoed, there is.but. little doubt. that it
weuld have , passed in some shape, as it will
‘undoubtedly ‘at aiother session. While the
want of such provision for the care, inanagement and profitable employment of the state
convicts is ackuowledged by all, there was a
decided disinclinatiun toallow interested
parties to make the state's necessities, the
basis.of.a monster speculation. The state
prison has been extensively used for this purpose already, and the thing is emphatically
played out, as the last portion of MeCauley’s
history abundantly proves.

RATHER SPARTANLIKE. — Lieyt. Abner
Smead was sent by Lieut. Slemmer with
dispatches to Washington, apprizing the
Government of the absolute necessity of instautly reinforcing and provisioning Fort
Pickens. On his way; Lieut. Smead visited
the Cotton State Government at Montgomery and traitorously exhibited his dispatches.
The cunning telegraphic. wires informed the
Government at Washington of his treason,
so that when he arrived there his dispatches .
. were receivéd and he, himself, ignominiously
struck from the roll of the army. \ His wife
and’ children were in, Fortress. Monroe,
whitherhe instantly hastened ; bat the wires
were again ahead of him. He was not permitted to enter the Fort, but was décorded
an interview without the walls. Attended
by a few female friends, she. met him, and
thus replied to his request to: accompany
. him:
“Go home with you!” she exclaimed.
“Never! Our paths in.this world. are hereafter separate. I disown you, A coward
and traitor. you are no husband of .mine.
Henceforth you are to meas if dead. As
long as I live I shall wear mourning, and be
as & widow; and rest assured I shall edacate our: children ‘to execrate ‘ahd despise
your memory as that ofa recreant and
traitor.” %

to speak on the next Fourth of July; but if
I speak anywhere, will do. it in Columbia.
But by all: we hold dear, Jet us try to keep .

is devoutly fot the Union, and we can afford
to be tolerent. There should be no proscription. This would be as unwise as it
would be unjust.”
