“A HEART FORANY FATE.”
Tis well to smile and sing the while
‘That love-and fortune wait ;
But O, *tis better—braver far
For him outside the gate,
Who looks and gees thy life ofeaseCompared with his estate,
To bear within his noble breast
“A heart for any fate!’
For any fate! though teil await-Though pleasure passes by ;
‘Though love, the angel of his life,
Looks with averted eye:
To dare and do, to still be true
To every pure emotion ;
To pledge himself cach day anew
To duty’s stern devetion—
© this is brave, though care enslave,
Though fate ambition check,
Drift back again a wreck,
There’ll be a glory round the life
Of him ‘outside the gate,”
Who bears within his noble breast
A heart for any fate.”’

A CHANCE FOR THE Soirn’s.—It is said
‘to be the intention of Charles Smith, in New
York, tocome forward-to the aid of the }.
‘country with a regiment of Smiths. He
thinks that there are enough men of that
@ame in New York alone to establish a right
of way through Baltimore at once. ;
Diep &UppENLY.—A sudden and singular
death at San Juan is recorded ia the Monterey Union. A Mr. Taylor, having been out
all day bunting for cattle, returned in the
evening and went immediately to bed, stating
to his family he would not live an-hour. He

Gkassnorrers.—The Virginia City Eaterprise says these pests have made their appearance in the valleys, and threaten to devaste the crops and grass, unless a heavy storm
comes, which invariably cleans them out.—
In Pleasant Valley the ranchersare digging
trenches and using every means in their
power te extermivate them. There is also
& species of crickee that have made their appearance simultaneously with the grasshopPera, which are equally ravenous but do not
@xist in as great numbers. If a good, jolly
fight could only be stirred up between them, . .
they might, Kilkenny cat fashiea, clean each
other out.
