sere gst NBR I ea aie ob ' { Wovada County Official Press. SUNDAY MORNING, MAW 24. Towssuw ELection—We think there is not woffictent interest manifested in the township elections which are to come off to~ morrow throughout the county. Although itis but wtownship election it is important ~~ to the township, county aad State. The of» fives, antl especially some of them, should be Gilled by qualjfied men. Thus, for instance, we want good, gé-ahead Cullectors, who will collect all the revenue possible. Bat of more importance still are the offices of Assessor and Trustee. The levying and saving ‘of taxes depend upon these. The Assessor sliould be a first rate judge of the value of . property, impartial, energetic and determin¢d in the rosecution of his duty. The office is under egtimated by most of us. Yet it lies at the very fowndation of our revenue. Cit~ zens should pay attention to this office and endeavor to fill it with a competent man. Under the township law, the Trustees are general directors of township affairs. They supervise almost everything. It devolves upon them to perform many duties which if done improperly injustice results. Gener‘ally we ‘have good men announced for almost ‘every position. ‘There will be no difficulty in selecting a good ticket from among all the candidates on the respective tickets. Let us have no one elected who is in the least tinctured with the copperhead phobia. Mensquare up and down onthe Union question, ten who are not afraid to speak their sen« timente straight out, are what we want. Tue Trick.—The Gross Valley copper~ hesds have put on their township ticket two _ or three names that are on the Union ticket They have, also, added aname or two of good Union men. The trick isa tranapers ent one. It is toglaze over the object of their organization. 1t is to gild the secession pill ; to fool the people. A dirty little} trickster is at the bottom of it. Gawd." Union men have no business on any copper-~ head ticket. Let them renounce the asso~ : mene is re : BtGGest 116 EVER TOLD.—The Placer. ville News says a stage arrived at that place from Marysville on ite way to Washoe, as the team could net get through the Henness Page. This route has not been closed a sins gle day this winter; but.we. do know. that the atage companies took all-the passengers bound for the silver regiun out of Placerville to Strawberry Valley and returned for-more. Our informant was one of about four hundred who was deposited at the latter point, and waited for the News and Sacramento Onion to blow the anow «ff the trail. How. ever, they got through after ashort trip of Bix daya. BounD For Dixie.— One company of six ty men, who have fora month past been camped on Posey Creek, Tulare county, started for Texas on Friday-last. The men are a good riddance, but the horses ‘which they stole are ‘a serious loss to the county. Suspension or H. Harris & Co.— Qnite an excitement was caused in Marys~ ville, says the Appeal, about ten o'clock yee terdey (Friday) morning, by the report that the well known house of H. Harris & Co., doing business in San. Francisco, Marysville, Oroville, and Gold Hill, Nevada Territory, had suspended payment. Their liabilities were set at various fabulous auma. : eS! ees Tue “arbitrary arrests” still continue.— Charles Gayarre tecently came on to New York to purchase goods for the use of the rebels. He is now “‘immured in-a dungeon” in Fort Lafayette. Tue total taxation ih San Francisco is leas this year than ithas ever been before Thegroposed levy is only $2 90 on the $100, ageeaved value. Last yeat it amounted to $2 74). Cuaxcep.—The Bulletin says! “That the Union party,’ as a party obghnltation in California, is stronger to-day tha it was three months ago. is to be attributed ty the goed semne of the Laniclatare,” AN excellent article of Maccaboy ani Rappee spall is now tanufactured in Sati A Youne alligator, about three feet long; epeaped from a abowmen in San Francisco, wa leat Sunday; and “took a turn” around the. Does anybody teally-want to know what Peace De~ mocracy is, he has but to take alook at the Grass y coppe d ticket. There is Ed. Maslin upon it for Justice of the Peace: to administer the laws he cannot administer without perjuring himself. Ed. has never been known as anything buta secessionist since.this war broke out. Late dévelopments shew that he played the secession game on leaving the office of District Attorney of the county—the same game of Phil: Moore; Crenshaw, Floyd and others of the same stripe. Make him Justice of the Peace, and swear him to an obedience to the Constitution of the United States, when he does not recognize .the existence of such anation? Pish! the idea is abeurd. Then, there is Washington Bayze—Phebus what a name!—on that Grass Valley ticket, for Colleetor—to collect moneys for the support of a Government he openly pro~ claims on the street and everywhere else, does not exist! After the experience of the past in trusting the secession breed with with public funds, this is the height of copdiaguised attempt to get control of the funds of a loyal Government in a town as intenses: ly loyal as Grass Valley. Spot the men who vote that ticket! They mean no good to the country. Mark them well, their conduct, their places of resort, where they live.— There are Knights of the Golden Circle, both in Grass Valley and here. They vote the copperhead ticket. ‘Loyal men of Grass Valley! show the scoundrels their weakness by polling all your votes for your truest men! Wrrn the exception of the San Francisco Spirit of the Times, we know of ne Union paper in the State that swears by McClellan. Nevada Daily Transcript. The followinig paragraph appeared in the Paris Moniteur yesterday, and has attracted considera. ble attention ; “The growing hostility of the United States towards England is exciting uneasiness in London. The last dispatches from the Washington Goverament have the eharacter of increasing the agitation.” _ TROPICAL VEGETATION OF THE AMAZON.—The magical beauty. of tropical vege~ tation reveals itaelf in all its glory to tha traveller whe steers his boat.-through the solitude of these aquatic mazes. Here the forest forms a canopy over bis head; there it opens, allowing the sunsbine to. disclose the secrets of the wilderness; while en either side the eye penetrates through beautiful vistas into the depths of the woods. Sometimes on a higher spot of ground, a clump of trees forms an island worthy of Eden. A chaos of bush ropes and creepers flings its gay flowers over the forest, and fille the air with the sweetest odor. Numerous birds, partly rivalling in beauty of color the passifloras and bignonas of these hanging gardens, animate the banks of the lagune while gaudy mnacaws per the loftiest. tress; and, as if te remind » t death is not banished from this scene of Paradise, a dark-robed vulture screeches through the woods, or an alligator rests, like a black log of wood or a sombre rock on the tranquil waters. Wellhe knows that food will not be wanting: for river tortoises and large fish are fond of retiring to these lagunes. If the Nile—so remarkable for its historical recollections, whicit carry us far back into bygone ages—and the Thames, unparalleled by the greatness of a
conimerce whicli far ectipses that of ancient Carthagé and Tyre—may justly be, called the rivers of the past and the present, the Ainazon has equal claime to be called the stream of the future; fora more splendid field no-~ where lies open to the enterprise of man.— The Tropical World. ———— A MARRIAGE by telegraph took place_yesterday alterneon, between a young lady in railroad, and an artillery soldier on duty near Washington ‘The Chaplain of the bride. groom’s regiment telegraphed the material question of the mariage ceremony to the lady viz: “Do you take to be your husband 2" directing her answer, *I do;’’ and to authorize him to propuse alike question to the gentlenian. In two hours after the lady received the Chaplain’s firat message, she received a second announcing that the soldier and she were man ard wife. The telegram is her marriage certificate. It ig understood. that the parents ofthe lady were opposed to the union, and that this method was taken to out-wit them. The time for the ceremony had been fixed by correspondence before: hand, and the lady was in waiting when the firet message was received at the telegraph office.
