Gaase VALLEY ‘Aman ~The people _Grase Valley mean to be ahead in the Stale of flags. ‘When our neighbors go in ‘fora . thing they do not-do.it by halves, but go the whole avimial on it. ‘They made up their minds, some days ago, to have the stars and stripes float-over their town, aid a subscription tor the parpere sig’ started” on, Wednes9400 were subscribed, “and the dee for the flag was immediately sent. to Messrs. Anthony & Co., of the Sacramento Union. These gentlemen purchased the large flag of the Sacramento Engine No. 3, which is 40 feet long, for the sum of $100, and forwarded it by. express . Jast. evening. (The staff frem which it will ‘float will’ be 160 feet above ground, and the flag and: staff will eclipse . anything Of the, kind in the State, Murrah for. Grass Yalley * ! <i ’ Howesty.—After recording so many robberies it is gratifying to notice one act of gen. vine honesty. A gentleman, who stopped it the National Exchange. on. last Sunday night, on going to the wash stand in the morning, took off: a valuable ring, which ‘he taid on the stand previous to washing his hands. He forgot it when he got through washing, and did not notice ‘his loss till hé’ got’ some miles out of town. He returned to the hotel, but could hear nothing of it. He came to town again yesterday, when the landlord, Mr. Lancaster, asked him whether he was not the man who had lost a ring in his house a few days before. The mun told him yes and described it, when Mr. L. handed it back to him.. The ring bad been found by a gentleman stopping at the house, who handed it to Mr. L.a few moments after the loser had called for it the first time. Improvine.—The number of houses in Grass Valley is increasing daily, and we are glad to see that the people there are putting up nothing but substantial, fire-proof buildings. A wooden town, in this dry climate, can not be considered a town, being liable, at any hour, to be swept out of existence. Our people have lear.ed this to their cost, and the people of Grass. Valley seem, also, to have profited by their experience. A. Delano (“Old Block’’) has commenced the erection of a fire-proof bank on his lof, adjoining the “Exchange.” Preparations for more are going on, and the foundations of three new fire-proofa will be laid next week. Real estate, in Grass Valley, is not only holding its own, but increasing in value, and this is the surest index of the prosperity of a city. RESUMED OPERATIONS. — The quartz mines of Grass-Valley have resumed opera: tions and everything is again.in its wonted It will be ‘recollected that the storm of March last flooded the mines so that they had to be temporarily abandoned, and did, besides, such damage to the pumps. that they have only now been able to get to work again. ‘They seem determined to make up for lost time, and the pay rock is being hoisted up in such abundance, that’ the stampers, with all their clatter, can-not keép even with it. SE . tH The cellers and low places of Sacramento being full of green, stagnant water, and the site of the city not permitting sewerage, the place is to be drained by a steam pump. The Unton says an iron pipe and canyas hose have been arranged to connect with a flume which will convey the water to the river, The flume is placed on the levee between the two railroad tracks. . It is over four hundred feet long, and is twenty inches wide and twelvé inches deep. It is now completed, or nearly so. 3" Stetson, landlord of the Astor House, in'New York, would take no pay for feeding the Massachusetts trvops. A most liberal ‘discount was also made by the steamship companies for thetransportation of troops.
