General Grant or whoever ‘had the authority to look out for the safety of the Federal troops, seemed to take it for granted thatit was understood the rebels were to await battle in their intrenchments, and that therefore no preparations on uur part were necessary. Our troops were thus left without intrenchanents, without cartridges, without in many casea, anything but empty muskets to defend themselves with. The fight at. first was ‘yather a massacre than a battle. That the army of Gen. Grant was not entirely cut to pieces and demoralized is proof of what splendid material it is made.
