A ResuLt or Mowammepan Fananic1sM.—Before the terrible massacre of the
Christians in Syria by the Turks, in the
spring of 1860, the population of Damascus
was about one hundred and fifty thousand, of
whom fifteen thousand were Latin, Greek,
and Syrian Christians. They were. among
the wealthiest and most intelligent citizens,
occupying a third of the ¢ ity, and its mos
elegant portion. ‘They were, however, attacked by the fanatical Moslems, between
three and four thousand massacred in eold
{ blood, while the rest fed from their infuriated enemy, and none have yet returned to
their homes. The -Christian quarter, lately
the most beautiful part of the city, with its
magnificent cathedral, its stately monasteries, and its aplendid residences, is now a heap
of charred and blackened ruins, in which not
a single house is standing.
