a lave a) ured: intre n» we B. id ly By: SOSOoOSaSoss —— _— stead Me, rg pnt oer . Pes NEVADA, CALIFORNIA The Atorning Transcript Published Daily, Monday excepted. N. P. BROWN, PROPRIETOR: _ : ©F FICE — COMMERCIAL STREET. . Terms ef the Daily Transcript: Twenty-Five Cents Per Week. Dectine or Inypourrations.—In no branch of business has the effect of the war been more marked than in the wholesale dry goods trade. ‘Fhere were imported into New York in] the first eihgt months of 1859, dry goods to the amount of $81,513,220; in in 1861 only $18,949,562—a falling off in two years of $62,663,718; surprising even to those who are best acquainted with the condition of the-trades Vhe decline is .a source of complaint to a few of our Eastern contemporaries, who argue that the revenue will be seriously affected by thie neglect of the people to buy the products of foreign * looms, and that direct taxation will thereby be necessarially increased. The primisgs. are eorrect and the deductions indisputable ; but the question remains—shall we, for the sake ef an average revenue of twenty-five per eent, on importations, incur a great-foreign debt that will be a dead drag upon the country during the continuance of the war; in other words—shall the people, in putting each quarter of a dollar into the Lands of the Government, throw seventy-five cents intu or across the sea? That needs no answer; ’ but it eovers the whole ease. .
